Hmm If that is really the reason for no breathable bumpers I might get one anyway.

Not being able to prevent kid getting caught in crib sides vs a chance of them getting caught in the protective barrier that you can watch for tears anyway? Unless there is something else there I don't know about it seems like you could go either way.

Good lord. It's a miracle our three are still alive. All had blankets, stuffed animals, and old fashioned crappy bumpers. Shit, DD1 even had an old crib that I'm fairly certain would make a safety inspector's butt pucker on sight.

I'm glad they're being more proactive about safety, though. Just because our kids were fine, the injuries or deaths from unsafe kids' products are reason enough to swing the pendulum the other way.

Their explanation for no breathable bumpers is at the end of this page (quoted below): http://www.parenting.com/article/sid...ntion?page=0,2

        Bumper Alternatives: Are They Safe?
As an alternative to traditional crib bumpers, some parents have turned to breathable, mesh bumpers or other bumper alternatives, but Dr. Moon said that the AAP does not suggest that parents buy them. “We’re, right now, recommending nothing in the crib, because again, we don’t see the point of it. So, why have something in the crib if it’s not there for a reason?”

Is the bottom picture the "after" with extra sheets and mattress cover? I don't like that bigger gap in the top pictures. I would have been a little concerned too. If she stood up I'm worried she would get a foot stuck in that gap.

We had a drop-sided crib but I was paranoid about it even before the issues came up...I put two of her little stools under it just in case and later we got the conversion kit...We had an issue with bumpers because she managed to wiggle under them and couldn't get out but hollered like crazy so I could rescue her- scared me though... We also used a crib tent- she climbed out at 9 months- walking at 7 months so not surprising she was an escape artist....It got recalled the week we were changing her over anyhow- so we got a store credit - but we used that crib tent until we was 2 1/4 thankfully no issues on that one...Our mattress though was too tight and I always had to have hubby change the sheets- couldn't even get it out...I am with anyone that wants to keep their kid in the crib as long as possible- the big girl bed means all of us get a lot less sleep.... sigh....good thing they're cute

The gap doesn't look dangerous to me but DD is in a crib with two drop-sides, so what do I know.
