  • Fussy baby

So, DS is almost 3 weeks and his fussiness seems to be increasing everyday. If he is not sleeping or nursing, he is screaming. I'd say he has about 2 or 3 quiet awake periods lasting about five minutes before he starts screaming. He sometimes tolerates the swing, but that is hit or miss. So, we end up having to bounce him on the exercise ball to keep him calm. This generally does calm him, but if you stop, he'll start screaming again.

Is this colic? Could it be something like reflux? He sleeps ok at night, he wakes up every 2 to 3 hours to nurse. I'm thinking if it were reflux, he'd be waking up a lot at night. He's gaining weight fine, and doesn't spit up that much. unfortunately, he doesn't like to comfort nurse that much, so that soothing method is out. He hates the car too! He won't fall asleep in it! Any other ideas? We are managing, but DH is back to work next week, so it'll just be me and the two kiddos. I feel bad for DD because DS cries so much, and I have to tend to him a lot. She is watching a lot of TV

It sounds like it could be reflux. I would just say it's normal but not all of the time day and night. My DD also had reflux and she never really liked cuddle time either. I think the pressure on her tummy hurt. But who knows?

Totally normal. Keep doing the bouncy ball. It should pass in a few weeks or so. Sucks, but newborns are just like that.

Sounds more like colic to me. I'm sorry! How is he in a carrier? Could you wrap him and bounce while you walk around?

I guess the good news about colic is that it should only last a few more weeks. Right?

This was us, too. Big hugs!
Is he BF? Have you tried eliminating offending foods from your diet?

13 is a wise woman DD was sensitive to dairy in my diet. It's a good place to start...

I agree about the offending foods, I had to give up dairy with A and it made a huge difference, it's worth a try.

My advice is always go the pedi and get the meds for it. Baby zantac was our friend and I felt very good about the mildness of that medication for my child. I know others feel differently and some doctors take different approaches. My take is make them comfortable as quickly as possible.

FWIW my baby didn't out grow it until she was about 10 months old.

Well, turns out he might have tongue tie We are going to get it evaluated this afternoon. So we will deal with this obstacle first, and then see about possible reflux. I eliminated dairy with my DD in the hopes that it would improve her sleep. I don't think it helped. I really didn't want to go dairy free again, but I'll look into it after we figure out the tongue tie thing.

So, he had a 3.5 degree tongue tie (with 4 being the worst), so we had the dentist laser it off. He is already nursing better and is not so fussy while nursing. I'm hoping this will allow him to comfort nurse more now that he can handle the milk better.

                        I'll keep you all posted!

Yay! I'm so glad! DD was also very badly tongue tied - she still has a little indentation at the tip. I hope this makes things better for everyone!
