My "baby" is 11 months old now, and she still isn't really on a nursing schedule, however she has become much much more efficient. Like, a few minutes vs 30-40+ minutes.
Most importantly, the newborn exhaustion is long long gone. I think the turning point around 6 weeks is a combination of the baby being a little bit more grown up and you recovering physically from child birth! Hormones are a little bit more balanced by then which makes everything easier.
Hope this makes sense, my kids are climbing all over me trying to divert my attention.
And btw, having a 3 year old and a newborn is really. really. hard. I know you know this, but I just wanted to toss that in there too.
