  • Winter coats

So, A is one, and on the verge of walking. We live in the Midwest, and have roughly Chicago temps. Does A need boots? Snow pants? A one-piece snowsuit? Just a winter coat? (I'm looking at all of you OH and MN mommies!)

I much prefer coat, snowpants, boots with mittens threaded through the sleeves (dummy cord so they can't lose them) plus a hat that straps under the chin. That way, when running to the store, you don't need to put them in a full snowsuit.

True story. DH that we'll just shop at Costco all winter since they have indoor parking

I had a CRAZY time finding boots for R when he was that age. I ended up borrowing a pair but they really weren't for walking just for keeping his feet warm. He luckily had a pair of rain boots that were to big so if he really wanted to go out and play in the snow I put the boots on with the rain boots over them. He did have a snowsuit though he only wore it to play outside in, if we were going out to a location, like them mall or church I just made sure he had his hat, coat and gloves. Gloves with a string are key just make sure the string doesn't get wrapped around their arms, hats that stay on whether tie or Velcro are also key.

I agree. For snowpants, look for the bib style that go over the shoulders. Also, our first winter as parents, out friends from Iceland got us this for DD. at the time you couldn't find them anywhere (they brought ours back from Iceland). I get them for my kiddos every winter - then I know their little necks and faces won't be cold and they'll be protected. Costco has mittens that zip down the side. SO much easier to get on (I think they're made by Head).

I can't remember if you have Farm and Fleet (Fleet Farm) or any other department stores for the ag crowd, but I've had better luck getting good quality kids boots at reasonable prices there.

S had some gloves that were longer (almost gauntlet style) that had velcro closures.

The gloves I'm talking about are long, too. Yo have to add a string, but you can safety pin a piece of yarn to each one.

We have toddler snowboots from REI (we got a pair for 1.5 yrs and another for 2.5 yrs) and a bib-style + jacket snowsuit from Costco. Love them!

ETA: Oh and zippered toddler mittens from Costco too.

I'll have to venture out to Costco, it seems HoW - we have a Theissens here - I'll have to check it out. If she was a boy, DH would want to get her a little Carhartt

I would go with a snow bib (overalls)/hooded coat combo, or a full-body bunting (with shoes).

Check Ebay for used Patagonia clothing. What size is she? They run about 1/2-1 size bigger than labeled.

Last winter when DS was that age we had bibs and a coat, mittens, and hats with velco. Most of the time he would just wear his hat and coat with a blanket for his legs in the car, but if we were going to be outside longer I'd put him in the bibs. I had a tough time finding him boots. I ended up getting some that were a little big. He only wore them a few times to play outside and they kept his feet warm. The indoor parking in Costco is great, I was loving that the other day when DS and I went there in the rain. Where do you get the clips/string for the mittens? I remember them from when I was a kid, but I haven't seen them. I think something like that would be really handy this winter.

I usually just crochet a double stranded cord and sew it to the cuff of the mittens. I've seen the clips in the kid section at Target and Walmart, but it is hit or miss

I would recommend them too. Also - that's awesome that your costco has indoor parking! I would totally do what your DH suggests. I'm dreading taking baby for errands when it gets cold here!
