  • Winter clothing

I'm really tempted to buy winter clothing for next year now. I'm used to shopping at end-of-season sales. But I'm paranoid about sizes. Last summer I got her a winter jacket that's 4T hoping it will last 2 winters. It's already very tight. Should I just get 5T or wait altogether?

I would wait but I am just not good at predicting sizes (even after 6 kids, lol).

There are some kids' winter coats that have a cord you can cut in the sleeves to make them 2"-3" longer. I got one for a friend's kiddo a size too large and it fit him *perfectly* for three winters.

I end up waiting because the kids are growing so much right now then I buy at the beginning of the season and buy a size above what fits. When I shop at Kohl's and Macy's with sales/coupons I can still get pretty good deals. So for a while the clothes are a little big (I roll up pant legs or sleeves) but then they fit through the whole season. I do the same with coats and A has been able to make it two seasons with a few but not this year.

Is there a consignment store/special seasonal consignment sale near you that you can take advantage of instead? They are usually close enough to the upcoming season that you can estimate the size without spending a lot of cash.

I bought dd a Mini Boden winter coat when she was 2 years old in a size 2/3, and at 3.5, it still fits her. She'll probably still be able to wear it this fall! I feel like their stuff runs really wide, and so she has just sort of filled it over the past winter.

There's a big kids consignment sale in two weeks, I'll try to stop by.

The issue isn't in width but length. When I got the coat last summer, she was swimming in it but now the sleeves are barely covering her wrists. I think the jackets that have extra sleeve length would be a good idea. Would it be mean to get a gender neutral color that can be worn by her brother later?

Coats are tricky. At the beginning of winter, K1 was still wearing his size 2T coat but his 2T coat was swimming on him. So, I bought an 18mo coat. K2 wears size 3T in some things now but he is still wearing the 18mo coat while K1 outgrew the 2T coat. Meanwhile, K1 has also outgrown the 3T shirts I bought him in anticipation this spring/summer and I'm worried that K2 will outgrow them before next spring/summer. Remember, there is always another sale.

I'm a sucker for 75% off and free shipping, so ended up getting a couple of jackets from Land's End for her to try.

And this is why I love the fact that my sister has 2 daughters - a crap ton of hand me downs for Sophie. Last summer I didn't buy her a single thing. Over the winter is was just a couple of things to fill in gaps.

Now? We get to drag out several bins of clothing and sort through them again to find the correct sizes for her! Woot - I love freebies!

And just to make things more complicated? C, who is 10-1/2 wears a size 12-14. (And his feet are big enough that I can wear his shoes - not that I want to typically.) His winter coat that I purchased at the end of this season is a 14-16 because I'll be damned if I am buying another coat next winter for him.

We don't get a lot of hand-me-downs. I got the jackets in 5/6 and both styles have extended sleeves, hoping to get 2 seasons out of whichever we end up keeping.

If anyone is expecting a fall or winter baby and needs winter stuff for 0-6m, I'll happily mail my stash.
