  • Mom/Doc Opinion

So R dropped the center speaker from our TV onto his toe somehow while I was downstairs folding laundry. I heard a loud crash followed by lots of screaming, ran upstairs to him in hysterics and A in hysterics because he was bleeding everywhere. I got him upstairs, got it cleaned up and from what I can tell it looks like he separated the base of his nail from the bed but its still attached on the sides and its bleeding both under and above the nail. I finally got some ibuprofen in him and got it stopped enough to put a bandage/bandaid on it.

DH is still not home, and has been no help. He's not screaming now though he did for quite a while, I've got him sitting with it elevated but I can't decide if I should take him to the ER...

H isn't home, but I don't think there's anything they can really do for it. He may lose the nail completely, so be prepared. Stay on top of the ibuprofen and Tylenol- that's got to hurt!

We don't seem to - right now he says "my boo boo's gone!" but of course that just means it doesn't hurt right now. I'm hoping that he'll let DH look at it during bath time, DH is on his way home now.

Yikes! I wonder if wearing a sock or shoe for that matter will bother/hurt him?? Is there any chance he broke his big toe? Poor little guy.

It's the basics for treating a partial toenail avulsion. I would find some open toe sandals (tevas) for him to wear with the toe dressed so that a tight/closed shoe doesn't push the nail around while its trying to heal. Most of the parent pediatricians would put their kids on antibiotics to prevent an infection, but these kids were school-aged and required to wear closed shoes, had sports, gym, etc.

I would probably take him in tomorrow for sick visit to his pediatrician. No ERs

I'm obviously not an ER doc. H just got home and said, "well, he needs to go in. They're probably going to pull it off." I hope it doesn't hurt as much as I think it must!

We are in the ER based on DH looking at it as best he could, R really doesn't let you touch it and GRU's husband's advice. I'm also a little concerned because it won't stop bleeding so we'll see what they say..

Poor little guy I'm glad you went in, though! How's A doing? I remember when my little brother broke his nose - I went a little emotionally nuts for a few hours. Hugs to you guys.

DH said that here, that type of injury is treated as an open fracture (and often is one). (So, yes, Momo!)

We are in a room, the nurse came in and said they would X-ray it and then clean it out. They'll probably have to sedate him to get him to let it look at it b/c as long as no one touches it he's fine.
