Coaches of rec league teams acting like jerks was what drove me away from soccer, basketball, etc and to a more individual sport--- swimming.
Ds12 just started baseball last year and his LL coach had a little temper, but not as bad as some of the other coaches.
When my kids were in the peewee leagues (3rd grade and younger) they had coaches who berated the kids... Especially their own kids. I have up on soccer after a horrible season when the coach refused to play my son even though it was rec league and they were 7 year olds!!!! Come on!!!
In swimming there are a lot of bad days and bad races. Lots of opportunity to lose--- it's interesting to watch my very competitive dd12 learn to stay positive even when she loses and even if she doesn't get a faster time. It's been a very good process--- and she says "I guess I have to work harder". She still is a horrible sport for family game night though!!!! And Mario party 9---- ugh!!! She cries when people take her hotels. Lol. She's 12... But ok.
Anyway---- this is an interesting perspective for me about how we as parents model good sportsmanship. We don't really follow sports but cheer for whatever Seattle team is playing. If they aren't playing, we usually go for the underdog. But we point out good plays, nice shots, unfair calls, and bad sportsmanship on the field or in the stands. This is a good reminder to me to keep things happy and PG rated!!!
