  • The TV battle wages on

I hate the TV. I am woken daily, by requests for TV and remotes being placed in my bed. Redirection doesn't work. Consequences don't work.

He only wants the TV. Why doesn't he play with toys that he likes? I'm so bored with his requests and his fits about television.

We don't watch a lot of TV, but I do want it available for the 2 shows I watch currently. In the past, completely removing the TV from the room has worked: putting it back after he goes to sleep so that I can watch is precarious, and gets old.

I had a 10 minutes sequence this morning of DS asking for a show, me turning it on, him immediately asking for something else and throwing a fit. I told him we are taking a break from TV, and unplugged it.
20 minutes later, he finally stopped crying.

I've had some luck stopping the pestering by turning it into a "yes". If he asks, I say, "Yes, you can watch a show during lunch time." (I usually let them start a show while I prepare lunch, and they can finish it while we eat.) Then, if he asks mid-morning, I tell him the answer is yes, but if he keeps pestering, the answer will change to no. He's tested me a time or two, and it wasn't pleasant, but we survived with a hug and "I know your sad. I'm sad, too, because I really wanted to watch Mickey."

We simply went through long periods (years) with no television in the house. We finally have a tv in the living room the kids could watch ... no one watches it. It was hard not having the tv at all though.

Our struggle now is computer time and teens.
