  • Car seats

E is still in her infant seat, and since she's so tiny, I imagine we can keep her in there for a while. It's super convenient, because we drive both of our cars pretty equally, and we have an extra base, so we just click the seat in and go. I have a sedan, and I drive us to school/work every day, plus anywhere else I go with her, without hubby. If we go anywhere together, he drives us in his SUV. At some point we'll switch her over to a convertible car seat though. Those are not as easy to switch over, and a little pricey to be buying 2 (we're thinking a Britax Boulevard, or along those lines). What do you guys do? Buying a new car is not an option, and I don't want to switch cars.

We have four Boulevards - one for each kid in each car. Same situation - we drive DH's car when we all go out.

We just bought two. Actually my MIL generously did. We love the Britax seats but don't bother with the Boulevard. We have that and a marathon and there is hardly a difference. I'm going to buy a sunshine kids one for N soon because she is growing out of the Britax, but I doubt your peanut will for years

Is there any reason not to keep her in the infant seat as long as she fits - which will be a while (30lbs and 30" limit)?

At some point she will get frustrated because she'll want to sit up and see more. But if she's happy in her infant seat I'd leave her be.

The infant seat has a certain recline that supports the posture of a baby who can't sit on her own. Once my babies were solid sitters, they began resisting the reclined position. They were happier in a convertible and an upright posture. I bought Marathons for their main seats when they were about 5-6 months. DH's car didn't have seats for a long time but I eventually bought a Cosco Scenera for a back-up seat.

Infant seat is fine within the weight and height limits, but I found my kids were much more comfortable in convertible seats. (The fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer on road trips!) We just took my car whenever we all needed to go somewhere together. Is there a reason you'd need to take your husband's SUV that would justify paying for another carseat? You can also get a nice one for your car and a cheaper one (or a used one from a friend you trust) for his SUV.

We have friends that still use their infant car seat for their two year old (they have the 30 lb one). It's crazy looking but he's super laid back and never cared about not being able to see or whatever.

We moved C at 6 months because she hated her seat. D is 6.5 and seems fine. I'll probably move D at 9 months unless she starts getting annoyed. I'm scouting a good deal on Britax car seats and will bite when I can.

ST, tell me about this other seat. Because D could use C's if I got C something new.

ST, She's growing out of the britax? Doesn't it go to 55 lbs or something like that?

We have 4 britax seats. Actually, we have 5 because we recently got a booster for K1. The booster is a lot like the seats with a 5 point harness but it has a 90lb weight limit and cup holders. I don't remember the height limit but we switched because he was getting too tall and because we needed to be able to loan out one of the car seats to a friend who was helping with the boys when Lambie was born. We figured that we'd be moving Lambie into the britax soon enough anyway. So, yeah, we need 5 carseats.

We had to get a larger car when Lambie was born so only one of our cars is big enough to hold three car seats. We just take that one when she's with us. It has not been terribly inconvenient.

I've been thinking about this too. C is almost grown out of his infant car seat so we need to get a new one soon. I'm going to keep him in it as long as he's under 30in, maybe another 2 months! He has never really liked it but doesn't fuss once he's buckled in. I would try and keep her in while she's still happy with it.
We mostly use my car but switch the base to the SUV for long trips. I'm thinking we'll need a seat for each car.

She's fine weight wise but she is an inch or so from being too tall now. That's why I was looking at the sunshine kids one-- it has a higher height limit

As an FYI - Sunshine Kids changed their name to Diono a few years ago. Same seats as far as I can tell.

LM - his car is a lot more comfortable for him to drive, because it has more room and he's pretty tall. With a rearfacing carseat in my car, the front passenger doesn't have a whole ton of leg room unless we put the seat in the middle, which is a pain for other reasons.

T&S - please let me know if you come across any deals!

She does still seem happy in the infant seat. Sometimes she'll sit up and seem a bit frustrated while going in, but once she's strapped in and has something to play with, she's totally fine. She can still sleep in it easily.

Wow, I thought the marathon had a 48 in height limit? Dd5 has tons of room for growth in the boulevard and is just at the end of the roundabout.

I think we are approaching the same problem for DS's britax car seat (now in Daddy's car).

I believe the height requirement is 40" in that seat - we have the same britax as N.
I've raised the harness and head impact sides as much as I can, and he's almost too tall.
                              I should check the manual...
