Auditory Sensitivity?

DS keeps covering his ears at different times and telling us things are "too loud."

Granted, he hasn't had hearing issues in the past, and he could be mimicking something, but it happens even with volumes that are low.

He did go through a phase where when he was excited, angry or scared, he would cover his ears and shake. We have since supplemented word/emotion identification (angry, scared, excited), and the ear covering related directly to emotional response seems to be dwindling.

Is this developmental, or should I make an appt with his ped? He just had his 3 yr check up in April, but he wasn't doing this yet.

I would make an appointment, especially since it just appeared. Hearing can really impact speech/learning, etc. so better to get it checked out! It's worth a copay for peace of mind.

I'd watch it for awhile. Is it was every loud noise, or just some? O is sensitive to some loud noises but not all. He hates the loudness of public toilets and hand air dryers and will cover his ears.

Toilets, hand dryers, the TV (even on a low setting), the vitamix, construction vehicles, talking voices on the radio (commercials & podcasts), etc.

I'd take him to an ENT and audiologist just to check it out. Maybe it's an ear ache or something that he cannot describe. Otherwise, you can try ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones and see if they help him out. I've been thinking of getting some for K1 to help block out distracting sounds. If it becomes really problematic, you find that he's having meltdowns or avoiding auditory stimuli, you may want to have an OT check it out.

He has an annual physical in two weeks, and I will be mentioning this to her at that time. Thank you everyone, for your advice!

FWIW, I'm very noise sensitive, too. It doesn't take much to be too much, sometimes.
