Not responding to the pump

  • Not responding to the pump

I think I've stopped responding to the pump. I can tell I have milk - I can hand express a decent amount, but I'm only pumping maybe half of what I used to pump at a good session. I replaced the membranes, and that seemed to help some, and I may go try the hospital grade pump at work too just to make sure it's not just my pump. It's so frustrating though. I'm trying to hand express what I can and keep my supply up, and I tandem pump with E when we get home because I can pump more that way if she can trigger the letdown. We just need to make it 2 more months!

Try the hospital rental and see if that makes a difference: BRU has started renting them here, and I grabbed one there. (Medela Symphony)

Try hitting the letdown button a couple times a session. When I stop responding to the pump, that's what I do and eventually it works again.

Thirteen - the hospital grade is at work in the pumping room and free for me to use. It's a Lactina instead of a Symphony, and I don't like it much which is why I don't use it (it doesn't have a letdown mode), but it's worth a try.

T&S - I'll try that too. Mostly I've just cut my pumping time in half and am now hand expressing a bit to at least try to make up some of the difference.

I also got a sample of Similac from a friend to see if E will take that. She wouldn't drink the Gerber that I had bought previously, but the Similac smells much better, so I'm hoping she'll drink that. Otherwise I'll probably start sending 4oz bottles instead of 5oz to try and make it last a bit longer. The pediatrician isn't concerned with her breastmilk intake at this point as long as she's getting a few good nursing sessions a day, but I'd still like to get as much in her as possible.
