  • Hypoallergenic soap

Nugget's face broke out a few weeks ago in what I thought was baby acne. At our ped visit she told me to change all of my bath & laundry products to hypoallergenic to see if that helped. My bath products changing did nothing and we already use free & clear detergent. Anyhow, by process of elimination I realized it's the J&J body wash I was using twice weekly. (That explains why it would seem to start getting better and then coming back with a vengeance. I used the tiniest amount again today after two weeks of no soap and I see the rash coming back a bit.) So now I'm convinced and I feel like a jerk for testing it out this final time.

Anyone else have this problem? Ideas for hypoallergenic baby wash...preferably that won't break the bank?

We like California Baby products. People also really like Honest. Both are sold at Target. J&J is so fragranced!

Babyganics and even Mustela (Stelatopia) are very affordable on Amazon.

Honestly? Just wash her with water for the time being. If you feel you must use a soap of some kind, I would go for something that is unscented and has a high olive oil content, ideally a castile. I can seriously get my geek on about soap, so tell me to stop if it gets to be too much.

My first thought is that she is sensitive to the fragrance in the J&J. It is a pretty common issue to be sensitive to fragrances.

I would avoid Dr. Bronners, although it is labeled as castile, it actually has a lot of other oils in it, some of which are too harsh for a baby's skin. Castile is traditionally made with only olive oil and is very gentle to the skin, but it has kind of a lotiony lather with not a lot of bubbles.

http://kissmyface.com/natural-body-p...e-Oil-Bar-Soap - this is a pure olive oil soap without fragrance. It has a bit of table salt added to increase the hardness of the bar.

Castiles can be pricey because the need to be aged for a very long time (like 6-24 months depending on the exact formula). That said, I would really stick with something like that.

We use an everyday shea body wash/shampoo that's good. But I rarely use it most of the time.
Nothing wrong with plain old warm water unless things are really messy

            We used this with DS1.

I justify the Mustela (non-soap) by using it on my face as well. I switched prior to pregnancy because my old regimen was causing dry skin and breakouts. Yay for 30!

We used California Baby when soap seemed to be called for, ie a poop blast up the back. Water by itself works great for the rest of the time!

Dove unscented bar soap. No kidding, recommendation from the pediatric allergist. Cheap and is the only thing that doesn't result in eczema flare ups.

My kid started to react to the new formula of the Dove sensitive skin. They changed it, and voila. Bumps. She switched to Cetaphil. She also uses African Black Soap from Target which apparently doesn't irritate her, who knows why.

Thanks for all the recs!! So far I've switched myself to a Castile soap and plan to try it on him too. We will go from there. I also for some Dove sensitive skin for myself today, so it's funny that you mention that Angie. I think I'll stick to Castile for now...

I've heard great things about Cetaphil too. I may explore that next if what I have doesn't pan out.

When did they change the formula? We're still working through our massive stash, I think I bought it over a year ago. My next stop would probably be Vanicream soap as the Vanicream products have always been good for us.

                            Nooooooo...

We may have to go back to only Shea butter "soap" for the adults. ($$$)

                              Hypoallergenic soap

I know some really great, gentle soaps.

And Dove, isn't truly soap, it is a detergent barb
