  • Outdoor Toys

E got a lot of toys for her birthday, and our families have already pretty much loaded her up with Christmas. So, we're trying to figure out what to get her from mom and dad, and the best idea I can come up with is something to play on outside. I've narrowed it down to these 3. Any opinions one way or another? Or anything I left out that you'd recommend? I want it to be something she can enjoy with help now, and can enjoy independently for a while later on.

I think the sports one looks fun! It would probably be fun for her for a little longer than the others, too. Some other outdoor toys my kids loved were the bubble blowing lawn mowers and the corn popper push toys. No-spill bubble tumblers are also always a hit. (Insider tip: Scented Super Miracle Bubbles worked best in the lawn mowers. Cheap bubbles don't work at all, unfortunately.)

I'd be wary of the panda climber, because it looks like it has the hardest staircase for a little to climb. So I think she'd be able to use one of the other two independently sooner. The sports one looks the easiest to climb, but we have a slide with a ladder similar to the treehouse one, and my son has that figured out.

We also have a water table that my son absolutely adores. Even now that it's dry and filled with leaves.

And we aren't getting him anything for Christmas. Too many doting grandparents.

We have the bubble mower, but she can't use it well yet, since she's not quite walking. Thanks for the tip on the bubbles!

That was my thought too on the Panda Climber, OC. We're not totally set on getting her something, but I'd like her to have it in the next year, so this seems as good a time as any to buy it.

I'll third the water table. It's still a hit with my three year old.

We got dd one of these, and she loved filling it up, emptying it, and pushing stuff around. It also helped to get her walking!

We planned to get her a wagon, but my parents ended up buying that and the ball pit, which is why we're trying to come up with something different. I like the idea of the water table, and we may get that eventually, but she's such a climber that I really think she'll enjoy something she get up on outside.

Is it bad that I'm getting my kids almost nothing for the holidays? Nov/Jan birthdays plus lots of family equals totally spoiled.

FWIW, my kids have tricycles, a playhouse, a cozy coupe, a picnic table, a basketball hoop, a teeter totter, and a roller-coaster. But every time we go outside, they prefer to dig in the dirt, play with sticks, and look for bugs.

No. We are in the same camp.

This sounds like my kids. We are thinking about giving them a new playhouse but seriously considering the alternative of just giving them some scrap lumber and cardboard. I'm pretty sure they'd be even more pleased with the latter.

This is us, too. I keep thinking anything we buy now we're just going to have to move for fellowship.
