  • Car seat rental

Has anybody ever rented a car seat with a car? My mom and I are traveling in a few weeks, and we have to rent a car, so we were considering renting a car seat with it so we don't have to travel with one. I looked at Hertz, and it's $12/day.

Are you flying? I know others have said it, but PLEASE just fly with your carseat. The last two flights DH and I have traveled together, there has been significant turbulence, once without the seat belt sign lit (unexpected) and people have been injured. One of them was during a landing we had that was really, really , really rough and made national news. In that case, a lap baby would be just that - on a lap and there would be no way to hold onto the baby - we thought we were crashing. We both were so thankful there were no babies out of seats on those flights.

I haven't rented one, but I probably wouldn't. Just because I've seen them lying around at a few rental car places, and it just doesn't look like they take very good care of them. Plus I've heard there's no guarantee they'll have one, even if you reserve it. I don't trust rental car companies very much.

After the measles outbreak at Disney, my faith in people not putting ill children in public places has all but disappeared.
We fly with our own: I use a Brica car seat latch to roll it through the airport.

I never rent a car seat - my own kids have gotten sick in their own car seats how many times? LOTS! So how many times have those rental car seats been puked in and how clean are they? Nope!

I was worried about the cleanliness too, and not convinced they would be within their expiration dates or not have ever been in a wreck. I think we'll take one of ours. I've been on a turbulent flight with her before, and I would have lost her had I not been holding on well - laptops and drinks went flying. For the sanity of myself and the rest of the passengers, not to mention the huge cost of an extra seat, I still prefer to have her in my lap. I'm well aware of the risks.
