  • First dentist visit

I'm confused about when DS should see the dentist. Our pediatrician has said nothing about it, just to make sure we're brushing his teeth and giving fluoride drops, which we are. The nearest pediatric dentist is 40 minutes away and they say 12 months for a first visit (DH says they're biased ). The family dentist says 3 years so I don't know.
He has been teething pretty much non-stop since 11 months and has just cut his upper molars. I think he'll have a break from it for a while and it would be a good time to take him if it's worth taking them so young. He's 15 months old now.
When did your kids first visit the dentist?

1 for both kiddos. Then every 6 months. They go to a pediatric dentist and it's been a good experience.

Our ped and dentist both said 2. Ped does fluoride painting prior to that.

So do they have to see a peds dentist at one or two or will a regular dentist see them?
I'm interested in the fluoride painting Deebs. How long does it last? I'm guessing our pedi doesn't do it since she prescribed the drops.

We took DS for the first time around two. The ped recommend going at one but DS didn't really have any teeth yet and I was busy. Dd is 18 months and hasn't gone yet. I'll probably take her when DS is due for his next appt.

Not sure - my philosophy was to make it as easy on the kids - so I took them to someone who had experience and an arsenal of tricks

We've been told that fluoride shouldn't happen until 2 (in both toothpaste and at dentist). The girls' dentist does the paint. I'm not sure about how long it lasts.

I waited until 3, based on my pediatrician's recommendation. I think the 1 year or first tooth recommendation is for educating parents and catching problems parents cause, like tooth decay from leaving them with a bottle. I could see going in at 2 if they need additional fluoride.

I agree with GRU about the pediatric dentist. Ours' office is awesome, and the kids love going. They'd be more likely to be bored or scared at my dentist.

18 mos here - DS1 had all his teeth. He's been 5 times, but is still unsure of the chair. He sits in my lap and I bring the iPad. 😄

The pediatricians and pediatric dentists have always told me the first visit is within 6 months of the first tooth. At the first visit, the dentist just looks to make sure nothing is wrong. They brush teeth with a manual tooth brush later. At around 3yo, they use the electric brush.

ask your dentist if he will see kids. Some will. I like the peds dentist because their office is friendlier for kids. The fluoride brushing takes just a few seconds.

I'm thinking we need to switch to a Ped for the kids, SJ who do you see? Heaven knows we're looking at big dental bills in the future.
