  • Peds Eye Exams

So I need a mama curbside consult.

Took C to the doctor today for her 3 year check up. Everything was great and as expected except for the eye exam. They do it with pictures and it was apparent that her eyes are WAY, WAY different. As in 4-5 lines different. The nurse was like, "Oh she probably doesn't know what the pictures are"...um, my kid knows what an umbrella, house, and an apple are AND she just did it on the other eye fine. I encouraged them to use the other chart to check (the one for older children) since she knows her letters and nurse pointed to a "B", C goes "I can see the 'H' above it" (referring to the line above) which was accurate. Nurse was like, "oh it's ok if she doesn't know her letters"...I walk C over to the chart so she can see and ask "what is this letter?" to which she immediately answers "B". Nurse brushes me off.

I asked the Pedi about it and she said it's not that big a deal, that it only represents like 20/30 vision (which seems odd - there's a big difference in size within a 4-5 line difference) or something and that they usually only write "Attempted" for this age anyway. Ok, I get that but my kid did it and there's a potential finding...

So, 1) am I completely crazy, 2) should I have her eyes checked? - I mean clearly this isn't an emergency but DH had glasses as an older child so it's not inconceivable that she'd need glasses. If she does have a weakness, I think she's probably compensating fine but that doesn't mean I don't want her to have appropriate correction as needed.

Thoughts? I don't want to be a psycho doctors wife, there are many more problems in this pedi's day than my perfectly healthy, clearly fine 3 year old but I don't want to miss something.

I would check it out with a pediatric ophthalmologist. My husband has eye issues that were not diagnosed until he was 10. WAY too late to fix anything so he has problems now.

He was HYPER about getting our kids screened by a board certified Peds eye doc. Despite the pediatricians not picking up on it nor the elementary school, when we got our kids screened.....DD needed glasses and DS #2 has more complicated issues. He's been patching on and off since he was 4 but now we are good which is awesome since he's in kindergarten.

You will never regret checking it out and finding nothing. You WILL regret not pushing it and having your kid possibly having issues later on. Just my 2 cents.

Was this at the peds office? Here they have a see to learn program where an eye doctor will examine your 3yo. You should do it. At 3yo, her vision should be 20/20 or better. K2 and Lambie both were 20/20 at their 6mo and 3yo exams and the doctor said they may end up needing glasses.

It seems like your intuition is telling you something is up. I'd go get her checked just so you know one way or another. (Coming from someone who started wearing glasses in kindergarten.)

+1. Having met C, I think your intuition is right on (just meaning that she obviously can't see the letters and wouldn't BS about it)

Take her in. We took B in almost a year ago, since DH is blind blind blind. So far, everything is okay, but I worried based on some things I witnessed.
            Can't hurt!

Take her. Dd2 started wearing glasses at 15 months and will have surgery soon to fix her lazy eye (which the average person doesn't even notice). It was caught with a cool screening tool our ped uses.

I would take her in also. A routine eye exam should be covered as preventive care.

I agree take her in, it won't hurt anything but definitely take her to someone used to kids.
