  • Contact Dermatitis

E has broken out in contact dermatitis across her sweet little cheeks and into her hairline on both sides. We are starting to apply some mild hydrocortisone to the area; if anyone has any other remedies, please do share.

What I really need help with is determining a probable cause of the breakout. I haven't made any changes to our soaps or detergent. I use pretty mild stuff because I have sensitive skin (Dove, All Free and Clear). I use Burt's Bees on her but we don't even wash her face with soap, just warm water. We have used wipes (Pampers Sensitive) on her face to wipe up spit up.

I do touch her face because it's cute, so it couldn't be the oils in my skin, right? Because then she would have the breakout all over. The only things I can think of is my makeup (powder and bronzer) or hairspray or perfume. I haven't changed any of those since she was born, but I don't wear them everyday either (1-2x week now that I'm home). Could it be my breast milk? 😳

I would suspect the wipes or the Burts first, although both are "gentle" they both have some potential irritants... Those wipes are awful on my hands, I've noticed.

I say wipes: even the free and clear ones broke out DS2.
We special order (eyeroll) then now on Amazon. 😄

Yup. Wipes are actually pretty harsh - even gentle ones. Are you sure it's contact dermatitis? It wouldn't be your makeup or hairspray unless she's all up in your face/hair I feel like the 7-12 week time was prime breakout time for the girls. As our pediatrician always says, "Babies are just rashy". At this age, she doesn't really need soap, so I'd just bathe her in water. What kind of detergent do you use? We use All Free and Clear on everyone's clothes, not just the kids. Is she rubbing her head/eyes when sleepy? Could it be irritation from that?

ETA: I'd skip using soap on her at all for the time being. It could also just be dry, irritated skin.

I'd try Aquaphor to clear it up. That stuff is a miracle. Worked well on my daughter's sensitive skin facial breakouts, but more in the toddler phase.

Yes to the Aquaphor! It's a miracle product! If it doesn't clear up, see if your pediatrician will give you a prescription for Nystatin (even though it's not fungal). That worked on DS when he got a nasty rash under his bottom lip that wouldn't clear up.

I have had contact dermatitis issues. My derm told me not to use soap when I was 10 years old. Obviously I still wash my hands, but 22 years later, I still don't use soap in the shower and haven't had any real issues since. It always shocks people when I tell them that.

I agree with the others...use Aquaphor on the spots she current has, and try to bathe her just with water.
I'm just trying to make it out alive!

I don't know how relevant this is, but I have some eczema type irritation on my hands and was using aquaphor. I went to the derm and they suggested CeraVe. It's amazing how much it helped.

I think you recommended this when J was an infant, and we've been using it ever since.

We're big on Vanicream here, too. My rashy, allergy kid can tolerate little else.

My dd5's eczema flares up in the winter, and we give her Aveeno oatmeal baths when it's bad. You can also get an rx for a stronger hydrocortisone cream, which is probably THE thing that helps dd the most.

So we have only used wipes on her bottom and applied a teeny bit of CeraVe to the affected areas (it works well for both DH and I). The rash is not as red but it's still there. Almost feels like it's drying out. I don't think it's the soap - I don't wash her face, just her hair and body, and those areas were unaffected. Gonna give her a bath in the next few days and see if there's a flare again. She has her 2 month appt on Monday, so we will see what our neutral set of peds eyes thinks.
