I think I posted in other threads about how I suspected that E had a UTI while we were on vacation because she had been constipated and her urine smelled. People still think I'm crazy when I suspect UTIs based on smell no other symptoms, but it's very distinct to me. We didn't want to take her in while out of town if it wasn't totally necessary because it'd be out of network, so hubby talked to his pedi uro attending and he said it would be fine to wait as long as she wasn't febrile or super fussy. She was a bit fussy off and on, but we were also traveling and way off her usual routine. I decided to take her in Saturday morning once we were home just in case, because I could still smell it. Her UA in the office was negative, so I was feeling a little bit silly, although I'm glad I took her in anyway because she turned out to have a double ear infection. Her only symptom of that was a runny nose, which she's had since Christmas! Anyway, the urine culture came back today and she did actually have a UTI after all. So, lesson learned, keep trusting my mom gut even when people think I'm crazy.

I've had a lot of UTIs myself over the years, so I just learned what they smell like. I'm weird. I had surgery to repair VUR as a kid, and it runs in families, so I'm probably a little bit more paranoid about potential urinary issues than other parents. Granted, mine presented with really high mystery fevers, and E hasn't had any of those yet, but still. I haven't noticed the smell since Saturday morning, so it looks like the antibiotic is likely helping both her ears and her UTI.

Hubby talked to the pedi uro again today, and he recommend an ultrasound to check for reflux. I feel like it's a bit premature at this point given that she's only had one UTI and she hasn't had any fevers. She had an unexplained fever once a while back, but I had her urine tested then and it came back completely negative.

New sickness maybe? I saw E was awake on the monitor this morning, but she wasn't crying so I was going to wait to go in. Then I saw weird spots on her sheet, so I wanted to make sure it wasn't vomit. It was. It was all dried in her hair, so it must have happened earlier, but I never heard her cry or anything. She doesn't have a fever, and she seems fine now, though she did gag a bit after I got her up. I took her in the shower with me to clean her up, and now she's nursing. I'll keep her home with me just I'm case. Of course we're flying to see my grandma tomorrow.

And, she threw up again when I tried to give her medicine in some yogurt (she fights and spits it out otherwise). Back to clear liquids.

Reaction to abx? Some of them cause nausea.

I talked to one of the pediatricians at the office, and they said it could be that, or it could be from the UTI or ear infection. Today is day 6 of 10 on the antibiotics, so I'm not sure whether it would take this long to cause problems. I was doing pretty well getting the medicine in her by mixing it with yogurt, but this morning she flat out refused that and spit it out, and it was when I tried to force it that she threw up again. The pedi suggested I try again this afternoon, and I did, but the only way I could get her to take it was to alternate bites of ice cream with the yogurt/meds. I got most of it in before she figured it out, but I don't know if we'll make it the full 10 day course at this rate. I got some diluted apple juice and some chicken soup in her for lunch, so we'll see how she does. She's currently fighting her nap, which I really need her to take so that I can be on a 1pm work call.

What kind of abx? Is it flavored? Sometimes you can have the pharmacy compound it to add flavoring to make it more tolerable.

She's on augmentin. It smells sort of flavored to me, and she loved her first dose, but she started spitting it out with the second and third doses, and after that I didn't even bother, just mixed it with the yogurt which she loved until this morning.

She threw up the meds this morning. I got it in her last night one lick at a time mixed with yogury and chocolate syrup, and she did ok. This morning she was refusing the yogurt, so I just squinted a bit in her mouth, and she gagged and threw up. Is 6 days of the antibiotics enough?
