  • "Quiet Time"

What do you do when your toddler doesn't nap but still needs quiet time (and mommy does too)? Long back story:

So, A doesn't nap. Hasn't napped in a long time. She would be in her crib and read or play with her stuffed animals and sometimes nap (like 10%). Everything was fine until about a month ago when we switched to a toddler bed. She was so bad She would pull every book, hanger, diaper, etc out from around her room. She would sit in front of her sister's crib and prevent her from napping. She'd be in and out of her room a million times for potty, water, forgot to wash her hands...

We all need nap time in the house. H actually naps (and still sometimes take a morning nap), I sometimes nap but need down time, and A needs "alone" time or she gets overwhelmed. So, we decided that A could quietly color or read in the family room during nap time. The problem - she needs more structure than that. She is 3, so making a huge mess is par for the course, as is the fight to clean it, but there has to be a better way.

We started on Sunday with the first 30 minutes being spent working with me on various workbooks (writing, etc). She really enjoys it and actually willingly worked for 45 minutes yesterday. Then she made a huge mess with paper scraps and crayons and 10000 princess "postcard" pictures. So I told her that today, she will get 1 coloring book, 1 set of crayons, her writing book, and 1 dry erase marker (for the book) - and that's it. She's not destructive in the "draw on the walls" kind of way, so that's not an issue.

I'm tempted to wipe her iPad and only fill it with educational stuff, but is that ok? WWYD??

It's tough once they start destroying things! Give her the workbook and then yes, the iPad. A little screen time won't hurt as long as you control what's on it.

It's so hard when the oldest drops napping. I still struggle with what to do with DS. Usually he gets too much screen time while DD naps because I just have to get stuff done sometimes. I never had much luck setting him up with a non-screen activity like coloring for long periods of time. He just wants to be around me.

I do toy rotation: 3 or 4 toys may go into the room for quiet time. I leave his door open, but if he comes out, it gets closed. Lights and curtains are on and open. Unlimited books.
If he trashed his room, he must help clean it up.

I'm like being that she doesn't really want to be with me-she is a serious introvert! It would be a lot easier if the girls didn't share a room. Maybe I'll make it a priority to get her iPad cleaned up a little bit! She actually will sit in color for a very long time by herself! Hopefully today will be better than your name-cleanup was beginning of the end of my sanity yesterday 😜 i'm glad I'm not alone and seem to be! On the right track!

Honestly, my 3yo and I nap while watching a TV show. We've had the same problem since switching her out of a crib.

She's almost the same exact age as A - three is hard!

I'm dreading this day. And I'm not combining rooms until C stops napping. They'd do fine overnight but they could NOT do naps...no one would be getting any sleep.

I would do the ipad in a heartbeat. I didn't have that option with my kids, but DS #1 watched a lot of Disney SingALong videos once he gave up napping! My older two conveniently (ha!) chose to give up naps right when their younger sibling was born....aaahhhh!

The endless alphabet app is good for that age.

But here we are still napping because my daughter is awful without one.

We have all three Endless apps, and all the "Monkey Preschool" ones. I want to find her a basic-ish anatomy app that says the part aloud when you tap on it, a more structured math app, maybe a piano lesson type app, and I need to take off all the baby/game things. Maybe I'll give her some computer time every so often, too. Maybe a schedule of things - like Monday is iPad day, Tuesday is Play Doh, etc. hmmmmm

I hope she naps until she's 5. But she will probably stop because I just said that.

I hate Monkey Preschool, it's so annoying. Has anyone tried ABC mouse?
