  • Weaning a Boob Addict

We are DONE. I'm so over the scratching and whining and occasional biting. His nursing manners are atrocious. I know he is still waking up to nurse at 5 am too. And if he pinches my nipple one more damn time...

That being said this kid is a boob addict and I don't think weaning is going to be as easy as it was with N. Any tips?

Don't offer, don't refuse? Or will that not work because of the addiction...

That's pretty much been my MO for the last month but he whines and scratches. So far I've said no today. I'm thinking of going cold turkey.

Is there a way to be too busy? Occupy him with something else? New "toys"? Like, "oh, you want to nurse, welook we were going to do this really cool thing instead, how about we nurse later and do this now?"

This worked for 2 of my friends.

That said, is he teething? All bets are off with teeth. :/

Actually today has been going surprisingly well. All bets are off at 5 am, though.

E is like this in the mornings, which is why we stopped this week. She's been doing fine so far because I've just brought her out of her room when she woke up and into the bathroom with me while I'm getting ready. So, basically she's distracted and I'm not offering. It's going to be harder this weekend, I think, when I prefer to bring her in bed with me when she wakes up before 7 so I don't quite have to get up yet. She's OK at night, so I haven't dropped that feed yet, but I expect it will be soon - I'm surprised my milk has lasted this long, and I don't know what it will do when we're down to one feeding.

I'm no help. Lambie is 13mo and refuses to drink from anything other than my breast. Totally disinterested in drinking from a cup, won't drink milk or water. Still nursing 2-4x daily. On the one hand, you have my sympathies. On the other, knowing that she is most likely my last baby, I'm savoring the baby cuddles.

There are no baby cuddles while nursing BabyJ. Only scratching, boob squeezing, nipple pinching, face punching, and a whole lot of screaming from both of us.

This sounds so familiar. I asked my mom whether she thought DS would lose interest in the boob like DD did. Her reply "Sweety, some boys never lose interest in the breast!" I ultimately cold-turkey'd it, but it went smoothly and DS adopted a new habit of bringing me a book, snuggling in my lap, and asking me to read it. So I didn't lose my snuggles!

I charmed my boys away from the boob with a sippy cup of whole milk with a little Strawberry Quik mixed in (known as "yummy strawberry milk"). I didn't put much in, but it persuaded them. They easily transitioned to plain old milk later on. However, I nursed my middle (most cuddly) son until he was 21 months old b/c I didn't have the heart to make him drop his post-nap snack!
