  • Tear duct probing

Looks like my poor little dude is going to have to have a procedure to clear his tear duct. He's had it since birth and it never resolved. He got a bug bite on the edge of his eye that caused the area to swell and now it's an infected mess. We have an appt with optho on Friday and the ped said he's guessing they will want to scope it. It seems pretty simple but he will have to be under general anesthesia, which makes me nervous. Anyone dealt with this?

My Dh does these types of procedures occasionally. Off the top of my head, I don't know the criteria to warrant a probe. Depending on the severity of the condition, many ophthos may take a wait and see approach before recommending the procedure. If he does the need the procedure, please be assured that it is very, very safe.

I know how you feel. My oldest boy had to go under general anesthesia twice by the age of one for ear issues. It's scary, but they do very well.

The ped said they usually wait til 1 year because most cases resolve by then. He is 14 months and we are still waiting, but the infection was what prompted the referral to optho since it hasn't ever really gotten better and is now causing problems beyond eye gook.

No experience, but the poor little guy. I hope the procedure a no biggie type thing for you both.

Poor guy!! We've never had that procedure but I get the concern with general. I'm guessing it will be a pretty short procedure like having tubes places?

Poor baby! I'm sorry, it's so scary when your LO has to go under for anything <3 J had double hernia surgery about six weeks ago and when they took him back I found a bathroom and sobbed.
Hope it goes well! (I'm sure it will)

                  That's awful!

LadyMoreta's husband was kind enough to answer some questions tonight. He's seen the procedure. DH was more freaked about it than me but then when I ask him well, do you want to do X instead, he's all "I don't know!" Argh

Poor baby. It is scary to put your little one under. I hate making such huge decisions for another human being. (This parenthood thing has been hard on me. )

I'm so glad you got to talk to someone knowledgable. (Thanks LM!!)

My son had hernia surgery at three as well. Although I was worried and anxious, it was so very routine and he did fine with the anesthesia. The trickiest part as mom was to manage post surgical pain at home immediately afterward. The hospital and procedure was a breeze! Hope it goes well for you both and he feels better soon.

I'm hoping he wouldn't be in too much pain from a tear duct probing, right?

I hope so! What do I know?? They just have to sedate him so he doesn't freak out, I guess? Couldn't they give him conscious sedation?

                              How is he today?
