I don't want the paci I WANT THE PACI!

So DD (3 months old today) does this really bizarre thing occasionally when she's trying to go to sleep where she'll suck on the pacifier briefly, shake her head violently side to side spitting the paci out in the process, and then immediately her eyes pop open and she starts searching for the paci again. If I don't put it right back in her mouth she'll start crying, and the second I put it back in her eyes shut again. Anyone know what's up with that? It doesn't seem to be related to hunger, otherwise I'd say maybe she's getting irritated at it because it's not giving her anything. When she does this she'll keep it up for half an hour, sometimes 45 min, before she finally drifts off to sleep. I'm so tired of putting that stupid pacifier back in her mouth!

I'd say that's what it is, she's frustrated or fighting sleep? What happens when you don't give it to her again?

I would probably chalk it up to babies not making any sense, but hunger would also be a good guess. Seriously, babies make no sense. The head shaking might be a weird self soothing thing too, DD often rubs her head back and forth, flails an arm repeatedly, etc. while going to sleep. Babies do a lot of odd repetitive motions for soothing. Sorry I'm no help.

I think when DD and DS did that, I would kind of hold my hand over the paci so they couldn't spit it out until they calmed down to a slower pace of sucking on it. I think they just get carried away at first and accidentally push it out with their tongue.

Could it be the pacifier itself? Once DS started to figure out what he did and didn't like, I realized that he liked a less bulky pacifier. I think the bigger ones can be uncomfortable when they're falling asleep and not really wanting to suck. We got Dr Browns, which are pretty flat and he rarely spat them out.

I couldn't get either of my boys to use a pacifier, so I'm no help, but these things are usually phases and as soon as you get it figured out she'll start doing something else!

Right?! They seriously don't make a lick of sense. I didn't know that about the repetitive movement/self soothing thing, maybe that's what she's doing. Good to know.

I hadn't thought about it being the pacifier itself either, I know I've got a few more stashed around the house somewhere that are a different shape, I'll give those a try. She has to have the pacifier to fall asleep though, she's got a major oral fixation thing and hasn't figured out sucking on her hands yet. If I don't put the paci right back in her mouth her eyes shoot open and she's wide awake, starts fussing and eventually starts all out scream crying until she gets it back.
