  • Carseats (Yes, another thread on carseats)

About a week ago, our minivan was rear-ended. The driver who hit us (elderly, probably shouldn't have been driving) said his foot slipped and he hit the gas instead of the break and he was ticketed so he has full liability. Everyone is fine but now I have the hassle of getting the bumper repaired, etc. My insurance company says that all three of my carseats should be replaced since one of the children was "injured". (At the accident scene, K2 complained of a headache so the paramedics were called to examine all three kids.) Long story short, I'm replacing three carseats because I cannot tell if there is any inconspicuous damage to the carseats.

Right now, I have the following seats --

Lambie: Britax Roundabout 55. Presently, she weighs 25lbs and she's 2.5' tall. She is rear facing and comfortable in the seat. Max weight 55lb.

K2: Britax Boulevard. He weighs 45 lbs and he's average height for a 4yo boy. Stalky with a wide torso. He appears to be comfortable in the seat. Max weight 65b. This is an older model carseat.

K1: Britax Marathon. He weighs 45 lbs and he's about 46" tall (very tall). Tall and skinny. The Marathon is has a higher back than the Boulevard but I cannot find the height restrictions for either carseat. I think this is a older model carseat.

My plan was to move the kids up/hand down carseats as they out grow theirs.

But now that I am replacing all three at once, I'm wondering if I should get something different. I haven't shopped for carseats in about 4 years so I don't know if something better has come along. Should I move K1 (or K2?) to a booster or is it safer to keep him in a convertible carseat with side impact protection until he out-grows the height/weight? Also, is this a good time to try to figure out whether I can put some of the seats in our RAV4 into the van and try to get something that allows us to fit three across in the RAV? Is there such a thing? Could that be done if the boys are in booster seats? It's a real hassle when Lambie only has a seat in the van.

I'd get Diono Radian seats for the boys and (eventually) one for her. All three would fit across one seat, FF, easily. They are pricey, though.

You can fit 3 Clek Foonf's across the back seat of a Rav4, but they're also significantly more expensive.
I think the general rec is to keep kids in convertible seats for as long as they'll comfortably fit, so if everything was fine before I probably wouldn't switch to a booster for K1 now, unless he has outgrown the specs for a convertible seat.

Another satisfied Radian family here, they're perfect for three-seats-across.

My complaint about the Radian is two-fold: it is really, really hard to install in a minivan because of seat pitch and those things are SO heavy so if you travel like we do, it's a huge PITA to lug them around.

I'm looking into the new Britax ones that are like the Radian design but have the Click Tight install which seems insanely easy.

I didn't think any of the new Britax models were as narrow as the Radians, are there ones that you can fit 3 across now?

After having a Britax boulevard and marathon, I'm never getting anything but else but Radians from now own. They are super heavy, but I actually find them much easier to install (at least forward facing) in our minivan. We use the seatbelt now though--N is past the weight limit for LATCH and I have always found it to be a PITA anyway.

                  As for booster readiness: http://csftl.org/harness-or-booster-...ke-the-switch/

There shouldn't be any rush to step down in safety, you know? I switched DD to a high-back booster at age 6, but if we spent more time in the car, or if she weren't flirting with the height limits on her Marathon, I might have waited longer. BTW, because kids have different torso:leg proportions, there's not going to be a hard-and-fast height limit in the manual. The forward-facing seat is outgrown when the child's shoulders start to bypass the top shoulder strap slot in the seat. http://thecarseatlady.com/forward-facing-basics/

Good luck on your research, I'm not up on most of this stuff, the kid paraphernalia market is crazy these days!

Watch a video on the Britax click tight system and you might waver on the radians. I think we probably just need to switch to using the belt instead of the latch system which is always bad but horrific in rental cars.

What's the weight limit for the latch system? I wonder if C is close.

It varies by car, you'll need to look at your manual, but I think it's usually 70 pounds combined weight of the kid + seat, or roughly 50 pounds kid weight. http://thecarseatlady.com/latch-weight-limits/

Then my boys will exceed the latch weight anyway. Also, I think that I have to use the seat belts if I'm putting 3 carseats across one row of seats.

The ClickTights are supposed to be really excellent for seatbelt installs, although Britax did just do a recall on them, so they may still be working out the kinks.

I'll just add that we have one cheaper seat (an Evenflo) and find the Britax we have to be much easier to use. The extra cost may not affect safety (it shouldn't), but it does affect convenience.

The ones people like here seem to be the ones people like everywhere (Diono, Britax, Clek), based on the research I did last year. The other one I read a lot of good things about was the Chicco NextFit, but it's pretty big. You could also look at the Graco Nautilus for the boys - that's a forward facing seat that converts to booster.

My big problem with the Britax seats are they are short for my tall kids. They aren't inherently bad in themselves, I just prefer not having to buy another seat later and the slim width
