  • Breastmilk and Kombucha

Crap. So today I finally got to the grocery store. Huge step for me 😊.

Anyway, I walked past the kombucha and got all excited since it's the first time I've been there since being pregnant (I didn't drink it because I read mixed things). So I bought some and immediately drank one when I got home. Then a few hours later I had about half of another. Didn't even think it might be a problem for breast feeding. So then I googled....

Anyone know if it's a problem? Should I dump out my milk for the rest of the day? Am I being crazy (sure hope so!).

I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to drink kombucha and breastfeed... I realize it can sometimes contain small amounts of alcohol but that's generally a problem with homebrewed, isn't it? The store bought kind should be fine for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Am I missing something?

Yeah, I haven't googled this or anything but I would assume you are totally ok.

I read something about all the vitamin b being bad? I have no idea. This makes me feel better / likely just being crazy.

I've been getting tons of unsolicited advice about what've should or shouldn't be eating lately. The babies grunt a lot and are gassy so these doula ladies keep telling me it's my fault for eating this or that. I'm totally paranoid now.

Meanwhile... They had my breastmilk while I was on a PCA.... Apparently fine to give breastmilk while on narcotics, but not after drinking kombucha.... I realize now how stupid my question was! Lol.

Gas can be due to things like fore milk/hind milk imbalance, and/or overactive letdown (more often than not). Don't let them make you feel bad!

                  1) Kelly Mom is your friend.
                  2) If you feel overwhelmed and discouraged by all the unsolicited advice, it's totally okay to tell people that you feel overwhelmed. The kind ones will back off - the not so nice ones? Just practice your "thank you very much - maybe I'll try that" and let it stop right there. Do what works for you!

Oh yeah, Kellymom.com is really great.

DH will not let me near cabbage or kale the first couple months. We still remember The Gas Incident with our first

                          Breastmilk and Kombucha

Funny story, Thirteen told me about how she made Corned beef and cabbage shortly after the birth of her first and her mom told her later cabbage breastmilk can cause terrible gas in young babies. Knowing this, I made a soup chock full of kale shortly after N was born and didn't make the connection until later. Apparently kale is part of the cabbage family. Whoops.

                            Poor DS1. 😇
