Ugh. I'm at the end of my rope with this colicky baby. Now I'm thinking it's silent reflux, something has to bothering him.

The ped suggested the hypoallergenic formulas for 10 days and then if that didn't do anything, trying zantec. She said I could also do it the other way around (meds first for 10 days, then formula if no change). I said I'd do formula first, but now I'm regretting it.

Did anyone give their baby reflux meds? Things turn out ok? I feel badly giving him anything, but really I can't take the crying fits anymore. They're just about 10 weeks old right now. It's been happening since about 3.5 weeks.

I think quite a few moms on this site have given anti-reflux meds.

Remember, you can always call and say what you just told us: you regret choosing the formula option first, and you'd rather do try the medication now instead of waiting.

Yes, call and ask for the Zantac! DS also had silent reflux, and we didn't catch it until he was one. (Most kids outgrow it by then.) Seriously, the kid almost never spit up! DD spit up all. the. time., and she didn't have any reflux. So anyway, by the time we started meds, he had all kinds of sleep problems from being used to waking up all night, and those took another 6 months to work through.

The thing with Zantac is, it has almost zero side effects. Tests for reflux are much harder on the kids than just giving them meds for a few weeks. (It can take that long to know if it's helping.) So I'd recommend getting the trial going as soon as possible. If it doesn't help, you can stop, and you can try weaning him off at 3-4 months if your Ped says it's ok, since that's when colic often ends.

        Reflux

Awesome. I just called and requested a script. Going away for two weeks Monday morning and I'd rather leave town with the meds in hand just in case they pull some BS about needing to come back in.

Thanks! I feel better that other people have given them to their kids!!

And Cassy - I've heard Prilosec is WAY better, but also that our insurance won't cover it until Zantac doesn't work 😏... Always an issue. Stupid insurance!

            +1

DD was given Axid for reflux at around 3 months and it was fine, no side effects whatsoever. In the end, it was a formula switch that helped her most though, but unfortunately you can't know what the trick is until you try. She won't drink non-lactose formula by itself, doesn't like the taste, so I mix about half regular and half of the gentle stuff and her issues are much improved.
