I would love to know where a 2-year old is supposed to be. I was essentially able to converse with M by 24 months (I was able to ask where she wanted to eat on her birthday, and what her cake should look like!), while pretty much C's only word is "poopy." I'm serious. She'll be 2 in about 3 weeks (adjusted she's about 22.5 months old). She doesn't say mama, but will say papa and occasionally says book. She has her own word for bird. And that pretty much it! Isn't 2 when the 2-word phase establishes itself?

Thanks! C has her 2-year well child appointment in 3 weeks, and I'm sure this will come up at that appointment. I'm not too concerned, because she has been about 2 months late with meeting most of her milestones anyway, but it sure is odd that she's really lagging with speech. thanks again for your offer of help to locate services. Have you seen you guy picking up any new words...?married to an anesthesia attending

This is extremely helpful actually! C makes similar utterances. Most of the time she won't say anything except for babbling. But then I'll occasionally say "one, two...." and she goes "fweeee!" So I know there's something starting to happen up there.
My guess is E will start talking in full sentences very soon. On his own timemarried to an anesthesia attending

Well, I'm not sure whether they "count", but lately DD has been saying " ah ah" (uh oh) whenever she intentionally drops something on the floor, and she's saying "hi" in mostly appropriate situations. Everything else remains pretty much the same... She only says "mamama" as an angry noise. When I ask her to say "mama" she still says "Dada". I'm convinced she's trying to torture me.

How many words are they supposed to have at 18 months? I can't remember at all what the pediatrician said. I think she said 100 by 2 yo and 2-word phrases.
We are at 14 individual words.
I was looking back at an old video of M to see where she was at this age. Whoa! Huge difference. In one she says "I tickle toes, I tickle toes! (Tickles her own feet. Laughs) I funny." Hmm...married to an anesthesia attending

Here's some guidelines to help you pin down where she is on the range? But my SLP friend said it's closer to 2.5 (30 months) that they start paying closer attention and figuring out who might need intervention. http://www.asha.org/public/Early-Det...ing-Disorders/Alison

Alison, you are exactly right about the 2.5 age cutoff for intervention vs non-intervention. We were just at the pediatrician for dd's well baby, and that's exactly what we were told. Uh-oh and oh no are considered chunks and not two words, so I was a little down, because those were the only 2-word phrases that dd was saying. Things are picking up for her just in the past week, I think. She now says "HELP!" and "I go." The latter isn't in the right context, but it's something...married to an anesthesia attending

Ha I actually asked my SIL this for Thirteen this morning (fresh out of speech path school:
From 18-24 months babies should be saying 20-50 different words in 1 word utterances (mama, dada, milk, no, mine, go, etc) 2-word phrases should happen around 2 years old.

We're almost at 18 months, and all we have are "hi" and "uh oh". Even "hi" isn't pronounced well - "aye". I'm seeing some strides in variety of syllables, word understanding, and her ability to communicate with sounds and gestures, so I think we're getting closer. But not a whole lot of progress. I know she knows lots of words, since she can follow a really wide variety of complex commands - "please put your shoes on the mat," "if you're happy and you know it, pat your head!" (or another new version she hasn't heard before) etc. etc. Just not verbalizing yet. :/Wife of PGY-4 (of 6), cat herder, and mom to a sassy-pants four-nager.
