Our insurance plan labels ABA as "scientifically experimental and unmerited", so they won't cover it. I pushed for letters from both the developmental pediatrician and the gen ped to try and sway the insurance company. I then decided it was all bullshit and called my sister (she's a certified tech who proctors the behavioral plans for a BCBA clinic in another state): we will perform an assessment on Saturday via Skype. We will determine behavioral goals, and generate programming to meet those goals. I will proctor the programming on Tues/Thurs, and she will oversee. I am pulling DS2 out of preschool on those days, so I can have one on one time with him to run the therapy.

On the medication front: DH says "I don't want to medicate a three year old brain", so we are on the same page as skeptics. I scheduled a consult with the gen ped to discuss findings/recs/test results from dev ped in December. Until then, DS2 will be undergoing speech on M/W, preschool for half-day on MWF, and ABA therapy proctored by me on Tues/Thurs. The preschool director and his teachers are on board with the transition, and it will also save us some money, so no complaints. The last thing I have to do is contact his OT therapist and let her know the recommendations from the developmental pediatrician. I hope she doesn't take it personally, but this is period of trial and error.

        DS2 Speech Therapy

Jumping forward: we are starting meds tomorrow (a different type). We got the IEP formation together, and he qualifies for full day M-F with an ESE and 2 paras.

Our zoned school is full, so we were re-routed to the nearest one in our district with an opening (where I experienced the racism during enrollment and called the district superintendent to report). I have made my decision not to enroll at that location, and will instead enroll starting with summer session at our closest, zoned school.

He continues with speech twice a week, out of pocket. He is wicked fast and smart, and needs ABA. 😂🤦*♀️

The ESE district coordinator called me today: she called transportation and had them sign off on a re-route from the school with the racist incident to another really good school equidistant from our house.
I met everyone today, was allowed to tour the school and meet the teacher. No weird vibes, awesome multi-ethnic, poly-lingual staff.
            DS2 starts tomorrow.

Very rude staffing specialist from racist incident school called to let me know “another family wanted services but she didn’t want to give away our spot.” I let her know we would not be enrolling my son, and to of course give the child waiting the spot. She said she wanted to be sure, and I told her that I had shared with the registrar on Monday that I felt uncomfortable and would not be enrolling him.

As a last retort, she said with disdain: “Well, I just really hope your son gets the services he needs.”

Wrong move, wrong day, wrong parent.

“Oh don’t worry, he absolutely will. I can assure you, because I’m his mother. Have a great day!” *click*

Well done mama warrior. I’m not happy re: racist incident but it seems like maybe it was meant to be with this other school being such a better fit.

Little steps, everyday. Damn if it isn’t so hard to get services in America.

He had a great first day! Took a mini nap in the car to go get his brother and is in good spirits. ❤️
