Hi!
So my kids have been so sick the last few weeks. The first virus was nbd for one kid. The other is a serious cold/viral vomiter. He tends to aspirate, choke, then vomit pretty consistently. So everything seems like a bigger deal with him.
Typically, their viruses seem to last for 3-4 days, and they seem to get sick within about a day of each other. This time, the first round seemed to be over in a week. I kept them home for a few days after because we were going away and I was hoping to avoid taking sick kids on vacation. I would say both were healthy for about 9 days.
Second round has been a little over two weeks. Kid (b) sick - was actually given meds (really bad double ear infection, gross colored snot, eye draining, and some thought of bronchitis.), then seemed a little better after two days, then kid (a) got super sick - in ER two days last week, and was given meds for ear infection (but it was pretty debatable whether he needed them. But since we were worried about pneumonia too, we didn't put up much resistance). Kid a has been doing much better. No fever since Tuesday or Wednesday. But kid (b) got sick again, on Monday. This time clearly more respiratory than the last. Fever for last 5 days. (Typically low - he finished meds today, I'm sure I should probably take him back in, but waiting to see if he gets a fever this afternoon). So maybe kid (b) just had a break in between the two viruses, and kid (a) got them both at once? Who knows.
So- assuming kid (b) is fever free today, how long do I wait until they can go back to regular life. Park, play dates, swim lessons (no other activities right now - thank god)?
I ask because I feel like they need time. It's so boring, and the weather is really nice right now. I know they - and the babysitter- would love to go back to the park. And I would love to take them to the zoo. I usually think general rule for activities is 24hrs after last fever.
Then yesterday one babysitter sent me a text saying that kid (b) had another low fever -- our babysitters know each other and overlap shifts at the end of nap time. One doesn't speak amazing English, the other does, so she usually texts me any questions the other one has -- she wanted to know if it was ok to give him meds. I said yes. Told her what kind etc. Then I said I could be home in 15 min if he wasn't feeling well and was being difficult. She didn't respond for a few minutes, and then sent me a text asking if the other babysitter could take them to the park?!?!?
No way, right? The one kid is obviously still sick since he has ANOTHER fever. That's not fair to everyone else at the park. And I feel like the healthier of the two was just in the ER on Saturday. I think it makes sense to give him some time before exposing him to other sick kids. Is that unreasonable?
I don't know. I'm not sure what's appropriate. We had a play date thing tomorrow afternoon, and we cancelled because we don't want to get someone else's kid super sick. But I don't know. I don't know if there is ever going to be a end to this. Seems like at least one person in our house has been sick since mid-January. Is this just the new normal, and I should get over it?
I also like really need them to be fever free for long enough to get their 18mo shots were are now a month late because of this constant sickness thing we have going on.
I don't even know if you'll be able to follow that. I feel like I wrote it in three phases and it's all over the place. Sorry for the complete disorganization. I'll try to edit later if I have time!
