  • Babysitter pay: how much extra for second child?

Our babysitter has been with us for 2.5 years. She is an elementary school teacher and is really great with C. She usually spends half the time playing, then does preschool lessons with him. She will also help him put his toys away. We pay her about $2 an hour over the usual rate for an experienced babysitter here.
Now that R is at the age where I'm comfortable leaving him with someone, I'm trying to figure out how much extra we should pay her. R is quite a bit more work since he's a very mobile 8 month old who gets into everything. Another thing to consider is that she usually leaves the area to head home for the summer. She has helped set us up with summer sitters in the past though.
    Any ideas? TIA!

We pay well, but also set it up so that the kids are already in bed by the time the sitter arrives. I hadn't thought about paying more per hour, based on number of kids, but that makes sense.

We increased by $2/hour and I'm told that is what is expected.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. R did really well with her yesterday. I was home but not in the room. A date night may be in our future.

No change for us. Same rate unless the sitter asks for more. The "going rate" is more than they get paid for waiting tables or working in a shop so they are happy.

My children are harder to deal with than working in a shop or waiting tables though. I don't think those are equivalent tasks. I know maybe I'm different bc I'm talking about a professional nanny and not the occasional babysitter but my nanny earns every penny (even though she's by far our biggest "bill" every month).

I'm talking about the average high school sitter who will move on to college in a year or two. My kids are work but definitely not as much work as 100 hangry people and being on your feet 8 hours.

That's what I've heard for my area, too.

And that's per kid. So for example, $12 for one, $14 for two and $16 for 3.
