  • New School

The kids start at their new school on Monday. Tomorrow I can take them to see it and meet their new teachers. I think it will be a short adjustment for E, but she'll have fun. I'm a little worried about C. He's going into the 1yo class, which will be good overall, but he's still a little behind. I suspect they're taking one nap a day, and he's been taking two, although I tried him with one today and he did well. He's also going to be napping on a mat instead of a crib, so I have to go find him a mat by Monday - we have one for E because the old school ordered them for us. I know this will be good, but I miss their old school already, and I hate big changes.

    Why are they switching?

I'm sure it'll be great. Speaking of, I think I need to order a nap mat too. R will go to school in the fall and I've never had one that young go to school before.

The current school only goes through 3, so E would have to move in the fall. The new school has a really great summer camp with swimming for E and water play for C every day, so I felt like as long as we had to move at some point, we might as well do it now. I could have kept him at the old school, but I didn't want to drop them off at 2 different places each day when I could switch him too. I think it will be good for him to be in a 1yo class with kids who are mostly walking, instead of the crawler class he's in now, plus the new school has a nurse on campus. One of my good friends has a little boy who will be in his class too.

We met the teachers and saw their classrooms today, and I feel a little bit better about Monday. I really liked C's teacher, and she gave me her cell phone number after I explained about his heart and everything, just so she could get in touch with me easily if anything ever comes up. We also did one nap yesterday and will do it again today and this weekend to help prepare him.

I found a nap mat at one of the local school uniform stores, but they couldn't monogram it for me before Monday, so I'm going to take it somewhere else and see if they can do it. This is the kind E has, so I wanted to get C the same one: http://www.schiros.com/nap-mats/nap-...-attached.html

Change is hard, but it sounds like the new teacher gets it and wants to make you feel comfortable.

Today is the day! They haven't called me yet, so I guess that's good. Drop off went OK, but I'm super nervous. I forgot to buy nametags at the store for them, and I couldn't find anything this morning to work, so I sent them without. So...hopefully they don't lose them. E will be OK, but C obviously can't tell them who he is. They start in before care and then go to their classes later - C is with the 1yos, and E is with all the big kids (2-8th grade). I had asked if they could eat breakfast in before care and was told yes - the kids have been eating breakfast at school forever. Except I dropped them off at 7:30, and nobody else was eating. C's room is smaller, so they put him in the table to eat, and he was mostly fine. They put E in the lunch room, away from all the other kids to eat though, and she wasn't thrilled. So, I may have to figure out how to feed them at home before we leave. They take forever to eat sometimes, which is why we haven't been doing it before, but I guess we'll just have to make it work, because I don't want them to be the only ones eating. Do all these kids really eat before 7:30?? I can't wait to pick them up and see how it went.

Sounds like it went well and I'm sure E will have all kinds of stories to tell when you pick up, hopefully good ones. DS used to eat breakfast in the car on the way to daycare. We went pretty early though and they served breakfast which he would also eat there a little later. Seems like they would have more kids eating breakfast there starting that early.

We're only in the car for about 10 minutes, and C has a habit of throwing food that he doesn't want to eat, so unfortunately that's not a good option for us. They mentioned maybe having kids eat from 7-7:30, in which case we'd need to plan to get there earlier (I was aiming for 7:30, so I could get to work by 8). Or, we can just eat at home. I may try eating at home tomorrow to see how that goes. I tried it with E a couple of years ago, and it didn't go well.

Eating at home sucks. I loathe mornings and trying to get D to eat. She wants to chat and talk and whatever and I'm like "D please eat" 1758393 times. I often end up dressing her as she's eating bc it takes her 45 minutes to eat 10 spoonfuls of oatmeal.

Yep, this, exactly. "Eat your breakfast. Leave your brother alone. Sit down and eat. Leave your brother alone."

I never finished writing this... I probably won't this time either! My kids are up by 5:20 at the latest. I still could never get them to school by 7:30 alone - maybe if it was 5 minutes away.

Weirdly, I think breakfast is the only thing that helps me... I think maybe because both are in high chairs. I can trap them there and get other stuff done. Cleaning them after eating adds time. One likes to shampoo his hair with food. But at the same time, not sure I could send them dressed and then have them covered in food all day.

Sunscreen and getting dressed is insane for us. I f'ing hate mineral sunscreen!!!!! And they love running away from me while I try to dress them. I used to get them dressed either in crib or in high chairs, but now with the sunscreen.... it gets all over everything and I can't get the stains out, so I'm stuck running after slimy children trying to get their clothes on. I really need to send them to the T&S school of getting ready in the morning! Your kids sounded like morning champs!

I'm going to have a time getting them to school by 8:30 in the fall.... but 7:30 would never ever happen for me.

Fortunately they're reasonable cooperative. I get up at 6 and am ready by 6:45 usually, depending on whether the kids are also awake and how needy they are. So I've been getting them naked, putting sunscreen on, then getting them dressed by 7ish, then giving them about 20 minutes to eat breakfast. Sometimes we get ready earlier and they have more time to eat. C has all finger foods (sliced fruit, cheerios, cut up cereal bar), since he stopped letting us feed him earlier, and E has yogurt with everything else C has. Occasionally E will make a mess with her yogurt, but generally they don't make a huge mess, especially if I'm in there and monitoring what C throws on the floor. We prep it all on Sunday night, in organized containers, since we were sending it to school. We'll probably keep prepping it, because then I can just grab their container and give it to them and not worry about having to prep anything for them in the morning. It's easier to clean too, because I can just dump what they don't eat and put the container in the sink before we leave, without having to wipe down C's high chair. E sits in a booster at the table. I pack their school bags at night too (swim suit and towel for C, towel and change of clothes for E, since she goes to camp in her swim suit). And I make my shake and pack up my own bag while they're eating. Their new school is actually only 5-10 minutes away, which is nice, although it's in the opposite direction of my work, so it takes me a bit longer to get there now. My goal is to get them dropped off after 7:30 (before then and I have to pay extra for before care), and before 4 (again, you pay by the hour for after care). They haven't been finishing their breakfast at home, so I've just put it back in the fridge and offered it with their dinner, but they've been doing well so far otherwise!
