  • Toddler (Almost 3) and Bunk or Loft Bed

Can an almost 3 year old child handle a low-to-ground loft or bunk bed? Is this a recipe for disaster?
He would either be on a mattress on the floor under the loft bed, or on the bottom twin.
(He and his brother share a room: DS1 sleeps on a twin, and DS2 is still in the crib, but it's time to transition)

I love this one. It's considerably lower than other bunk beds I was looking at.

DS2 slept in the bottom bunk at my parents' cabin a few weeks ago, and it was fine. He's still in a crib at home, but we just sort of barricaded him in with a bunch of pillows along the open side of the bed. He's 2y9m.

Could they sleep together in a full or a queen?

Your oldest could handle it at that age. N could have too. I might have even trusted my 2nd. But your 2nd and my 3rd are cut from the same cloth and you will rue the day you brought an elevated bed into the house, at least until he's a little older.

I wanted to do the IKEA Kura with a mattress on the floor but DH wanted a more traditional twin over full bunk so that is what we went with. DD is pretty wild but she has done fine on the top. She started sleeping up there around 3 1/2. If I had another option though I probably wouldn't have done a bunk but we are pretty limited on space.

Bunks aren't recommended for anyone under age 6. My husband has seen some bunk bed related injuries. He won't let us get them...

            But I think he's a tad paranoid.

We have the IKEA Kura. C is on top and D is on the bottom on a mattress on the floor. Surprisingly, we have had no issues (it's really low to the ground). I trust C but I figured for sure that D would get up there and jump off.

It sort of depends on your bedroom setup and family culture around rooms as well. We literally only use our bedrooms for sleeping. We are downstairs all day and I can count on one hand how many times they've been sent to their rooms (they're plenty naughty, we just have other time out spots). So they really have NO chance to get up there and do something naughty because C would tattle on D the instant she got up there and put a toe out of line. I think it would be a different story if they played in their rooms.

We have a kitchen/living room culture for play, and bedrooms for sleep as well.
I know DS1 is mature enough to handle it, but I am unsure if DS2 would behave. Guess we'll find out... 😅

The bunk bed is coming... we are determining whether or not DS2 should sleep on the bottom bunk, or the trundle?
