  • Ryan needs surgery. AGAIN!

I know this isn't the worst thing that could happen, but I feel like this kid is just....gaaaah! First ear tubes, then mouth reconstruction, then profound deafness in one ear, and now this.

We went to the orthodontist this morning for a consult.

He has an extra tooth that is right above his top front teeth, ready to come in and do some serious damage. Suck, suck, suck, suck. He didn't take the news too harshly because he gets to miss some school for it. I, on the other had, remember how bad it sucked when he had his last oral surgery, and I am NOT looking forward to this. I have to call the oral surgeon and make an appointment.

    Suck!

Extra. And to think, I didn't even take Tylenol while I was pregnant with him. His mouth and ears are a mess. I don't have any weird freaky stuff like this. DH doesn't. Just this kid. They think that his inner ears and some of his mouth problems formed while I was pregnant with him and that I may have had some kind of weird infection. I don't know. I thought I was done with this kind of crap.

When he was 4, he had the entire floor of his mouth reconstructed using a z-plasty to lengthen his very, very short frenulum. The front of his tongue was atrophied, and the back was hypermuscular. He had to do 4 years of speech therapy, even though he compensated very well. That same year, we learned that he is profoundly deaf in his right ear. His left ear is normal, but all the tubes in his ears are smaller than they are supposed to be which exacerbated his readiness to acquire all ear infections when he was a baby. He had a set of ear tubes that helped tremendously. So, anyway, his hearing loss is sensorineural, and there is nothing that can be done about it short of a cochlear implant, but his other ear is fine, so we aren't doing that. He compensates SO well for his lack of hearing in the one ear. He does wear a hearing aid, but it doesn't benefit him very much. He cannot localize any sounds, and he has a hard time with background noises. Very scary in some situations, really. So, we found out he was deaf and had to undergo all these neurological and genetic tests. We still don't know why he is deaf in that ear, but we have to be very careful with the other one.

    Anyway, suck.

I'm sorry Heidi (and Ryan)! It sounds (with my vast experience in oral surgery dripping with sarcasm here) that is will be a much smaller operation than the others he's had to endure? (she writes with hope ...) . Either way, you never want your kid to have to A) be knocked out, B) have surgery in the first place or C) endure ANY pain ... so I totally understand why you're so upset.

I'm so sorry. Hang in there.

I know that these things sound trivial in comparison to what we hear our spouses' doing everyday, but it is a big deal. I cried for the first two of Cade's dental extractions. (It is predicted that he will only have two more). Way to set up a life long aversion to the dentist.

            That sucks.

I had to have a tooth extracted from the roof of my mouth and as I recall the anticipation was much worse than the actual procedure.

Now I'm officially a huge weanie... Ear tubes alone were a big deal to me.

Hang in there-- I'm so sorry!! It's just terrible. I'm sure he'll be fine, of course, but surgery isn't fun. Poor guy.
