  • The Monkey Bars Win Again

DD1 is now the second kid in her class with a monkey bar-induced broken arm. The other kid is still in a cast. There have been a slew of monkey bar breaks this year at school. What gives? The bones, not the bark chips, I guess.

It has been a totally crazy day. She is ok and it doesn't seem to be a bad fracture -- distal radius or something? It is swollen but not really deformed. Her arm is splinted and we will follow up with a peds ortho on Monday. Luckily, my babysitter was free and came over to watch the E and I found another friend to pick up dd2 from preschool. Having all three in the ER would have sucked. I also lucked out with my ER doctor neighbor being home to take a quick look. I'm glad she took a shower last night. She is glad that soccer is over so that she doesn't have to sit out any games (but I'm not sure when b-ball starts).

I'm so sorry. I think the school needs to upgrade the ground cover they have, sounds like they are missing a layer of cushiony bounce.

Oh, poor Bryn! At least the weather is cooling off so she won't miss too much "outdoor" fun? I hope she heals quickly!

Oh no! I hope she's feeling better. DD broke her wrist in kindergarten and she was in a lot of pain until it was set. Good work on the sitters. ER visits with a flock of kids suck.

Tell her to feel better soon and get lots of people to sign the cast!

Oh hugs and kisses! Hope she feels better soon!

DS1 broke his arm on the monkey bars when he was in grade 2...DH sees tons of them, something about growth plates and lack of fear

I found the cast to be the biggest PITA, talk about smelling bad! Maybe girls smell better???

DH gets so irritated that parks are taking out swings, but still have monkey bars. As far as playground equipment is concerned, monkey bars are a sure fire way to get kids with fractures.

Ouch! Poor kiddo! At least it's not July or August, so it won't be so hot under the cast. I hope she heals quickly!

Re: The Monkey Bars Win Again

Luanne, that is such a good point. I thought of that as I was falling asleep last night. I don't remember so many injuries when she was in K or 1st grade. I wonder if they need a bark chip refill? Last year, a girl got a spiral fracture on her leg from falling off the monkey bars. Anna has been *obsessed* with the monkey bars. Maybe this will slow her down.

The ER check-in lady broke her collar bone on monkey bars when she was a kid!

Yes, there is some sort of growth plate thing mentioned. We also have the lack of fear going for us. She did it before school started. Because of other "fun" and crazy events during the middle of the night, DH went in late to let me sleep a little more and he took her to school. That gave her extra time (mom is never early!) to do the monkey bars before the bell rang. The play structure was wet and she slipped off. She iced after that and it felt a little better so she went to class and I didn't get called until 10:15 when it was bothering her again.

I hope it doesn't get stinky. We'll have to do the plastic bag trick for showers. The temp one should come off on Monday and then she will get another. She is wanting to do a stripe pattern with the colors. The girl does like HGTV. Maybe red and white a la a candy cane for the upcoming holiday season?

Yikes! Glad it doesn't seem to be too bad.

The piece of gym equipment that my husband is on a mission to eradicate are trampolines, specifically the big back yard trampolines. Too many head injuries from kids bouncing and landing on necks/heads.

Maybe the school should contact the Nike foundation and see if they can get a donation of the recycled running shoes. (Nike has drop bins at lots of running stores and they convert the shoes into playground materials)

DH is with you on that. He'd also like to eradicate motorcycles, motocross, ATVs, and monkey bars.

I am so sorry about Bryn's arm, Nellie. I hope it heals well on it's own without the need for surgery, and I hope it is far from the growth plate!

Nike is just around the corner and a bunch of Nike employees have kids at the school. I'll inquire about that one too.

Heidi, I think it is the growth plate. ?? I don't know. Her wrist and forearm were swollen but not really mis-shapen or deformed (seems like a good thing?). The ER doctor didn't see much on the xray, maybe a chip off of...something. It seems like it would be more than a sprain given the tenderness and that it hurt to move her fingers. I think there was something about a Slater or Salter.....something....I don't know.... The PA from the ortho office is supposed to review the note and xray today and call me. I swear, I thought I was paying attention.

Poor kiddo. I know we have had a couple of monkey bar breaks at DS's school as well this year already. Honestly, I don't remember that stuff happening when we were little and I know for sure we didn't have the cushey rubber chips under all of the equipment. Heck, I think we even had a merry-go-round and swings.

But then again we also had lead paint, no seat belts and didn't have to be home until dinner time in the summer...

So sorry this happened! Maybe she'll go easier on the monkey bars now? I'll bet she's getting lots of attention at school today. She'll need a helper.
