  • seeing gravity....

My six year old daughter asked me last week "Can everyone see gravity?".

It turns out, for about six months, she's been seeing these see through white lines zooming past her field of vision. They go horizontally past her in a sequence of little rods moving really fast. Others zoom away from her really fast at the same time.

She thought she was seeing gravity. Her vision isn't blurred at all... she can see everything through them fine. No headaches, no eye pain....

I made an appointment with an opthamologist for next week. I wasn't sure if I should go to a neurologist or an opthamologist - or just family practice? Any ideas? Ever hear of anything like this?

Wow...I guess that reminds us to investigate the "silly"/unusual things they say!
Please keep us posted on what's going on! I hope it's nothing serious!

I hope it is just those "eye floaty" things that that she is seeing!

I'd probably start with optho and then go to a neuro if I didn't get satisfactory answers. Wow - good thing you listened to her. I would have been a bad mom and blown it off as one of the bajillion odd things that they say.

It sounds similar to what I have. I've had them for as long as I can remember - they are "floaters" - they come and go...sometimes I 've had them for weeks and then don't see (or notice)them for months ITA - go to opto first. and let us know how it goes.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I also think ophtho should see her first.

We had and continue to have some weird vision issues with DD1 - the first ophtho we saw didn't get it at all, and then a peds ophtho who'd been on vacation nailed it as soon as we came in. get a recommendation for a peds ophtho with some neuro expertise as well - there are neuroophto specialists, but probably not with a peds angle.

Dd#2 sees a pedi optho. I love her! And her office is of course geared towards kids. We had to get refered from a regular optho first which was annoying. I think they do it tho, to weed out non candidates. I think you're going the right route. Good luck, I hope it's nothing.

Hubby says why limit yourself- you need to see both- she describing a vision problem that could be based in a neurological issue. or a vision problem period. He gets migraines that have similar 'auras'. Sometimes they manifest in actual headache and sometime just really weird visual signals for a day or so.

He says start with peds optho and then move to peds neuro.

My oldest had a similar problem. We took him to the optho and it turned out to be "floaties" that were fairly normal. Hopefully it will be something like that for your daughter.

                          Re: seeing gravity....

Thanks for all the replies. It's taking me a while to update because I broke my right arm and toe on left foot right after she went to the doctor about "seeing gravity" a couple of weeks ago. I'm doing good now and can use my right hand again to type pretty well. Dh was just getting home from a shift in the ED at 1am when I fell and broke the bones, so we just went back. It was a little comforting knowing the doctors and they were really great.

As for the update regarding my daughters vision. The optho said it was not related to her eyes for a few reasons... one of which was that she sees the shooting white lines when her eyes are closed too. He thought it was probably from stress - maybe from our recent move for residency. He said if it changes or doesn't go away without talking about it thta we should look into neuro. The optho said he didn't think there were any neuro symptoms he could see right off. He said he's had kids come in with all kinds of strange visual things going on that don't amount to anything... including only seeing red from one eye and green from the other......

First, so sorry about your accident! I hope you are feeling better soon.

As for the doctor's report, it doesn't sound like he got you any where. Do you think it could be migraine? I get "complex migraines" with lots of different visual disturbances. Sometimes, I just get the visual symptoms and no headache. For instance, the other day I was seeing white flurries or spots and flashes of light when my eyes were closed.

It sounds like he just ruled out what he should, that it isn't optho...I'd still follow up w/neuro just to be safe
