It was chilly when we went to San Diego in Feb. With that said, there was still plenty to do. Coronado is fabulous! Old town(a stones throw) is quaint and has some pretty decent restaurants. Balboa Park is also a nice location to visit. Like Davita said, there are several attractions that are family friendly w/in an easy drive.
This year we went @ the end of May. We actually stayed on the beach in Del Mar, it's a little north of San Diego. We had a penthouse condo that was literally on top of the beach. We took our family helper along, so we could enjoy going out on dinner dates in the evenings.
The down side of the vacation was that the housekeeping was sub par for what we were shelling out! We alerted the property mgr upon arrival and had housekeeping and maintenance take care of things. I think they let things slide w/the interior of the place, because of the multimillion dollar view/experience. We were on the end, which proved to be very private and scenic. There was nothing but privately owned undeveloped property, w/ beautiful dramatic bluffs to one side of us and there was another condo across the outside hallway.
We could just walk down our outdoor staircase and then to the gated steps, that lead to the private beach. Our balcony also over looked the private pool. This was a residential complex so you really didn't have a crush of tourists.
We would see dolphins in the AM as well as the early surfers, not to mention all sorts of birds. I specifically enjoyed sitting out on the balcony @ night enjoying the high tide w/the moonlight hitting the water.
There were some other properties that would have provided more pleasant interiors, but would required a block or two walk to the beach. As much as I was disappointed by the housekeeping of our condo, I must say the location, sights, and sounds were amazing! We did Sea World a couple of days as well as the zoo and the Wild Animal park. I regret not doing Lego Land especially because the kids are the perfect age for it!
If you think you might interested in Del Mar, drop me a PM. I'd be more than happy to pass along the info we obtained from researching various houses and condos in the area!
