  • music recommendations?

My kids listen to the soundtracks to Jump In and High School Musical all the time... Is there anything else that's decent? Just to shake it up? I would play the Beatles, but Kate took my collection. Apparently they're really cool now...

Does anyone do the KidzBoP CDs?

We do lots of country music and classic rock around here.

Nikolai is obsessed with Annie Lennox. He also likes most classic rock and loves when the jazz station plays blues music.

Jason Mraz? He seems upbeat and kid friendly. My daughter likes showtunes, classical and girl pop (Avril, Go-Gos, Ting Tings...) and my son likes Green Day/Nirvana/loud music that he thinks I will find reprehensible.

I'm no help. We invest heavily in headphones.

Um, not ALL his songs are like that. I usually listen to one of his CDs when driving and I think one song in particular made my in-laws and DH's aunt blush one time they were riding with us. "Butterfly", I'm looking at you.

Some things we all really enjoy are:

Steve Songs (several cds from him)

            "Snacktime" by the Barenaked Ladies

            Tom Chapin (also several cds)

and songs from musicals old and new, Wicked, West Side Story (I like to be in America...), Joseph.
Caught the 2 year old singing, "sit down sit down you're rockin' dah boat!" the other day,

Beatles and Elvis are always good!

Now I need to download Butterfly. Peggy -- you could put one of your kids' favorite songs in to Pandora and see what comes up.

I second Cassy's oldies. My kids were happy with that for a long time.

The Limelighters also had a kids album that I loved when I was little:

Damm. Appears it isn't available on cd, bummer. Wonder if I could burn it to CD from my parents' copy...

Sorry, not much help here. My kids like bands like Korn, Cake, System of a Down, Metallica, Soundgarden, Disturbed, Saliva etc. None of them can listen to pop music longer than maybe 20 seconds before their ears begin bleeding.

I have no idea why I couldn't find it when I first wrote this, but my google-fu is apparently stronger tonight than it was then. It's been available on CD for 15 years. You can listen to samples here; they're definitely folk songs, but like most of the reviewers, I grew up with this album and absolutely love it, and would definitely recommend it for kids.

My kids like the same stuff I do and the same stuff their dad likes. We just listen to the stations that I like or stuff that's on my iphone. I only forward through Closer by Nine Inch Nails. I'll even let them hear Bitch by Meredith Brooks and You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrisette. I do sometimes let my kids listen to things that other parents would find completely inappropriate. The kids love to watch Jeff Dunham on YouTube.

My favorites are Maroon 5, Norah Jones, Daughtry. My son loves the "Guitar Hero" songs. He loves Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, Scorpions, Queen, etc.

When Alexia was 3 we were all singing along to I Love Rock N Roll and Lexi sang this:

"I love rock n roll! Put another dime in the juice box baby."

LOL. WHy would she know what a juke box was. I thought it was super cute. Lexi also loves Disney soundtracks.
