  • Girls' Books Thread!

O.K. Let's give the girls' their due.

So far DD has ripped through Magic Tree House, Flat Stanley, Disney Fairies, those gawd awful Fairies books, EB White's titles, Juni B. Jones, Magic Puppy, and the first four Ramona books. What next?

How old is DD#1? I have a lot of ideas, but want to recommend age-subject matter appropriate titles.

Gah! How come I can't get my 6 year old to read..... SEriously, major struggles.

              BUT for girls...

DD9 loves Dear Dumb Diaries (eye roll). At this age of 6 I think the Katie Kazoo books are fun. The Boxcar Children books are neat too- I don't think they are beyond a fluent 6 year old reader! I would say Madelein L'Engle might be pushing it... The Geronimo Stilton books that I dissed for 9 year olds would probably be a lot of fun for 6 year olds. DD1 was a good reader, and she got into the Misty of Chincoteague series at this age.

I agree, L'Engle would be a bit beyond a 6 year old, I think I read it somewhere around 8-9.

My daughter (4) is starting to move beyond picture books and enjoying listening to longer stories. Maybe your girl would enjoy these too on her own. Our local library has all of these books.

Maybe there are some Little House books for early readers?

The American Girl dolls mentioned in the other thread all have accompanying book series. I loved those.

I don't have a great sense of age-appropriateness, as I don't remember what I read when, but for eventually, some of my favorites were: Bridge to Terabithia, Number the Stars, The Giver, Travel Far Pay No Fare (and everything else by Anne Lindbergh) the Betsy-Tacy series. I recommend befriending a children's librarian, which was how I got a bunch of my book ideas.

I also read probably every Babysitters Club book ever written, so I may be a questionable source.

I second the boxcar children. Maybe Little House on the Prairie? I credit those books with starting my love of history. The American Girl books should be good too

Does anyone remember Sweet Valley High and some historical girl series that I can't seem to remember? I think that each title was a girl's name, I'm pretty sure Caroline was one of them. Each was set against the backdrop of some prominent period of American History. Anyone?

I was going to suggest the Little House series but they might be just a bit too old for her. The Bobbsey Twins books were designed for littler kids than Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys books but I don't know how young. I LOVED all three of those series and it started me on a life long preference for a really good mystery book!

There are a lot of historical books out there. That was DD1s genre. A lot of them are... historical... and so maybe better for a little older, because they deal with tough things like death and wars in historical fiction I think.

I also think you should check out Ivy Bean. DD9 loves them. She also loves Juni B Jones still, so I don't think Ivy Bean is beyond your little amazing reader!
