Student ID's

Do other schools around the nation require kids to wear lanyards with their picture ID? I swear, some school administrator watched the Seinfeld episode about name tags making NYC a friendlier place and thought, "hey, that's a great idea and then we can also pass it off as a security measure". High schoolers wear them and get a zero for the day if they don't have their ID. Middle schoolers have them and according to the principal, "will suffer the consequences" if they don't wear their ID (whatever the hell that means), and elementary school kids just got them this year but don not have to wear them all the time (yet). The reasoning for wearing the ID's all the time are, "to keep the children safe" and "so we know who everyone is". Really, does anyone think a lanyard with an ID makes the school more safe? And what happened to school administration talking to children and "learning" their names? Just more waste if you ask me. Seems like a few teachers could be hired with the amount wasted on the ID's.

Yup, it's lame. My middle schooler has one, but I kind of see it's purpose for some things. Like lunch. He swipes it, the money comes out of his account. It's great if you buy school lunch, which we do. Most of the time, I think it is pointless though.

The middle school where I did some observation (when I was going to be a teacher for about three weeks, ha) had IDs that had to be worn on lanyards. They emphasized it as a way to teach the kids to be responsible for something. And they used it for lunches, bus passes (for the city bus system), and possibly other stuff too. I can see it being useful for middle and high school, though I doubt that having it visible at all times accomplishes much.

Um, no. I think this is a really bad idea. Let's advertise children's names with their picture on it. And let's put it on something that can be a choking hazard. Here they are given a lunch account number, but the number doesn't change, ever, even if you change schools, so it is easy to memorize.

The middle and high schools here require students to wear their IDs on lanyards. My guess is because the schools have so many students that it makes it easier for security peeps to identify those who do or do not belong. It's not uncommon for kids who don't attend a school to attempt to get onto campus, for whatever reason.

We had IDs in JH and HS, but never had to wear them on lanyards around our neck.
This seems similar to the "this is how many children I have, and their names, and a list of our worst fears" decals that people put on the back of their car. If you do, that's your perogative, but it's not my cup of tea.

Argh. Those decals bug me more than anything! It's basically a giant sign saying "break into my car, wait for me to come back, and kidnap my children!"

Sidenote: my BFF wants to get me those decals. One girl, 12 cats. Haha

We don't wear lanyards here- I've never heard of that. The kids have student Ids but I don't think dd15 uses hers unless she's going to a game or a dance or something like that for the discounted rate.
