He has been keeping his log of numbers on the iPod (dhs old iPhone) independently for a couple of months. I can just hear some caterwauling from the other kids about him having a cell and txting already lol. He's only 10!!! But since he is the only one who has to check his sugar all the time... I was planning to get his phone activated this summer when they start middle school-- hopefully Steven and izzy can text share for at least a year....

Anyway ladybug I soooo appreciate your input on this! I love school nurses!!! I really do!

Called and got his numbers. Everything is good. He's taking insulin on schedule...

I asked what his sugar was before dinner and he said "97- a little low since we were running around and stuff". Lol. His target is 150 but 97 is ok. He's on the ball...

Fine- really. He sounded like himself- calm, collected, on the ball... He's been to lots of playdates and a sleepover with a cousin before where he's "handled" his meds all night. He's such a good and responsible kid... I'm lucky he's such a "little old man" I guess!!

Wow Peggy, having a 10 year old myself, I gotta tell you how impressed I am at his level of maturity and responsibility! That's awesome. I would be a nervous wreck too, but it sounds like all is well. Hang in there Mama!

Yay! I'm glad all went well. I have a 10 yo student who's mom still won't let her walk to the office unescorted and I handle all her insulin admins. You are both doing great! i would love to get her to a camp to help her transition to middle school next year, but I'm not sure they will go for that... I'm going to suggest it though. What camp did S go to?

Just a follow up- we picked him up this morning and all was fine! He had a good time and ended up hanging out with the older brother (12 year old) most of the night. They are friends from swim team so that was a natural (expected) thing to happen. The birthday boy (11 yo) is a great buddy of Stevens but a little more hyper so Steven gets tired of him after a few hours. . Little old man...

He has some lingering allergies from the cat they have (all the kids are allergic to cats but they love cats!!) but that's no biggie. He had a good time, sugars were well controlled, and he's a little sleepy now.

Steven went to lions camp Merrick in Virginia. It was good but there are lots out there-- there is one in northern central Pennsylvania that looks great. I can't remember the name of it- but it's all type 1 kids which is very important I think. I also looked for camps approved by the Diabetes association and the camp accreditation-- There is a website to find the camps. I'll look it up and post the link when I'm on my computer. I avoided camps that ran concurrent to "regular" camps (share campsites but different groups), and I avoided camps that had non- diabetics (siblings, friends) go along. I thought that wasn't the point. There are good family camps for people hesitant to send their kids away to camp too.

Really I can't emphasize enough how much of a difference the camp made for Steven to feel confidant with injections and with managing his diabetes. They also did an activity where they wrote what they hated about being diabetic on a scrap of paper then they threw the paper in the fire. It was significant to him anyway!!!

So glad he had a great time and everything was okay. The camp sounds awesome. Are you going to send him to another one or the same one this summer?

Ladybug-- I just now am on my computer- so rare these days- and these are a couple of links I used for looking up camps. I can't remember the other link, and I guess I didn't bookmark it, but I just googled for diabetes camps. One of these links (first one) is the ADA camp sight-- and the camp Steven went to was an ADA camp even though I didn't find it through the website...

Most diabetes camps run at least $700 for the week-- they are expensive but they have a full time nurse and doctor on site usually, and they take a little bit of extra training for the staff and the kitchen... Anyway, good luck to your student!
