girl scout ideas

O.K. veritable fountain of MSN knowledge, I need an idea for an activity for a girl scout meeting. My favorite meetings have are the easiest to organize because I basically enlist someone else to comes in and teach us. We've had a tour of the police station, an outing to a horse farm, a yoga class, a flag ceremony lecture, a tour of the local animal shelter, a talk with an ecologist, and a healthy chef course. Help a tired mom out. What is an easy, cheap, fun 45 minute activity I can organize for the girls. Any and all serious suggestions will be entertained.

How old are they and where do you meet? I was a leader for my nieces troop, and the kids loved doing things that people just don't do with their kid anymore (or maybe never did - my mom was a preschool teacher - I think we were extra crafty).
Candle making, soap making, baking

I am my daughters leader now and we meet in he library of the school - it limits us a ton. I can't wait for he kids to be out of cars eats so w can feasibly do field trips!

My daughter's troop just went to open ice skating at a local arena. They have toured a Maggie Moos ice cream place and got to make ice cream. The next meeting they are meeting at a nursing home to play bingo with the residents. They alternate between one outing a month and one meeting where they do a badge usually involving a craft.

All that sounds really great!! Makes me want to be a girl scout in your troops.

Izzy loved The Big Dinner-- the girls planned the meal, made ingredient lists, etc one meeting. The next meeting they cooked. They chose a Chinese theme, and made sweet and sour chicken, rice, sides, and i think green tea ice cream.

She also loved when the girls made healthy dog treats one meeting, then the leader froze them until the next meeting where they brought the healthy dog treats to the animal shelter and spent time with animals there.

Would it be weird to have a self-defense class? I'm not exactly sure what age this is, or if other parents would be okay with it... I guess it could kind of be like a martial arts focus, but talk about how they could use it in real life?

Fire station with a fire safety class? A behind the scenes at a local radio or tv station?

It's black history month. We just had a woman read "No mirrors in my Nana's house" and she gave an *amazing* assembly to the girls. They were still talking about it...wrote some journals, art, etc.

The Cub Scouts are going to a men's clothier to learn how to tie a tie tonight- maybe something similar for girls? Have a Mary Kay/Avon etc lady come and talk about importance of sunscreen and facial cleansing? We've toured the Alamo on the history days (first Saturdays of each month) and the kids got to play with toys of that era.

These are such cool ideas! We never did this kind of stuff when I was a girl scout. It was all camping and crafts.

I've seen lots of girl scouts here at the capitol and at city hall. Local government people are pretty accessible for stuff like that.

Oh yeah- we went to the office of our state legislator who always tells the story of how important it is to vote. He won his first election by ONE vote. It sticks with the kids.

Contact a local school that has a Lego robotics team and ask them if they'll talk to the girls about engineering while showing them how the robots and programming works. It's super user friendly program and it's a good age to get girls thinking about science in a fun and cool way.

Ok- now that I'm thinking again- some other things the boys have done are: go to a dog wash place and learn about how to wash and care for (brush the coats, brush teeth, etc) dogs and cats, they went to a cupcake bakery and learned how to frost cupcakes, they went to a local artists workshop and learned about wood-working and the tools (and were allowed to use the tools w/ supervision), they've volunteered at the school and done yard clean-up and digging out of the gardens.
