  • Adopt a Family Help!

I need gift suggestions for a 5 year old and 4 year old boy. I need to be able to order it on Amazon, or the like, today.

R just turned 3 and is big into fire trucks, trains, etc. but will he still be next year?

If you've got a 5 year old or 4 year old boy, I'd love some suggestions.

    Thanks!

ETA: And they requested educational toys/gifts ??

What about some of the games from the other thread?

I just got Kai Bop It for his birthday ($8 at Target). You have to follow a sequence and perform tasks. Listening and fine motor skills. It says for kids 8+ but Kai does it just fine.

Anything I-spy-like or Seek and Find books....but my kids like the harder ones, not the easy Highlights ones.

Daegan loves the golftee/peg puzzle at Cracker Barrel and they both like playing with Tangram type things.

Non-educational? Anything Angry Birds or Beyblades or superhero or action figures.

I second the throwing some books in there. You'd be surprised at how many children do not have books at home.

They also love board games. Chutes and Ladders and CandyLand are favorites for my almost four year old. Good for counting and colors. And his big brother will play it with him.

All excellent suggestions. If you know what characters they like action figures are getting pretty popular with O, who is 4. He's getting a couple Rescue Bots. Large floor puzzles (any of the Melissa & Doug ones) are great. O is really into the velcro food you can cut too. Melissa & Doug have some good ones too.

Books, i spy (it's a game and on amazon), blocks, cars, trucks, crayons, paper

Keep in mind -if you get anything that requires batteries, they may not be able to replace them.

Thanks guys this has all been very helpful. I almost got the boys walkie talkies and then decided against it because of the batteries. I found this family through a friend of mine that works with military families, I'm amazed there isn't some sort of formal adopt a military family program. Of course after doing this I suppose a lot of that is pride, the original family we were paired with then declined. But I'm glad we were able to help someone, next year we'll probably try to find a local family so that the kids can help me shop. I just didn't give it enough thought to plan ahead this year.

If you do adopt a family where do you get your family? I have not seen anything locally about something like this.

Our church does one. They work with a few Catholic schools and charities in the area to find the families.

A lot of school districts and fire departments organize adopt-a-fam festivities.

Hmm, maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. Our church does theirs through the school which my kids aren't old enough for yet. My kids preschool does canned foods, not gifts...

Our church does this, too. Delivering the gifts to our adopted family this year was a *very* humbling experience.

We do Project Angel Tree, and this year, all our persons consisted of homeless veterans who are in a skilled facility for "rehabilitation."

                          It broke my heart.
