7th grade starts here. Before then I dont see a lot of concussions in contact sports. More from bike or fall injuries. It's when their body mass and force increases that you are more likely to see contact sport concussions.

My brother got a pretty serious concussion from riding a roller coaster this summer. Like spent an overnight in the hospital because of right side weakness. We learned that night in the hospital that this was concussion #2 - he took a line drive to the helmet in baseball tryouts in April and didn't tell anyone he saw stars. He is basically done with contact sports from this point forward.

This happened 2 months ago, and he is still dealing with side effects. And it has also finally brought into the open some pretty serious mental health issues he is dealing with. Kudos to the post-concussive team at DH's residency program for doing such a great job. My brother can't even go back to gym without clearance from them (state law) and is getting out of tests at school.

I would be a proponent of doing both a baseline screening and a mental health screening at the same time at the beginning of HS. Connect the kids with the help they need. Have a baseline so you know that they are truly recovered before sending them back out onto the field.

I think that is a brilliant idea.

Oh Scarlett...that's so terrible about your brother. Wow... your brother's experiences REALLY illustrate why we should be more keen on all of this. I hope & pray he can have a strong recovery...scary stuff!

            Thanks Momo.

Without saying too much, since this is a public forum, my brother's mental health issues have been apparent for some time to DH and I. The concussion and related follow up brought out deeper stuff. He seems to be doing alright; haven't heard much from my parents on this recently.
