  • Children's coats

Anyone have recs for not bulky but warm, something like a North Face but not that pricey? Winter is here and my kids are still wearing last years coats which don't really fit! I hate to spend North Face money but I hate to but then these bulky things that most of the stores sell.

Lands End typically has some great options (we have a coat from there that ALL of the kiddos have used, except dd2 as its still too big for her).

Or buy North Face in a big enough size to last two winters and then buy them in a unisex color so your ds could wear sisters coat in a couple years. That way the cost per wear becomes pennies and makes good sense to buy the higher quality/pricier coat.

When I lived in Alaska as a kid I generally liked two-layer coats that could zip apart into a fleece and windbreaker or zip together into a parka as warm as a fluffy down coat.

My son got a brand-new jacket this year from Land's End, he loves the feature with the cuffs that cover his hands. They're having 30% off today, so the nice warm 3-in-1 types are running under $100 and I suspect that for my son at least the sizing will work for a second season. There are also a couple of models of ski jackets and 3-in-1 jackets on sierratradingpost.com.

DD has a hand-me-down jacket from LL Bean that's similar to DS's. Looks like their prices might actually be even less, about $100 regular price and 10% off today. (But I don't prefer to shop with that company, personally.)

Patagonia has some ah-ma-zing coats for kids. Check out their online catalogue, then buy gently used off of eBay.

        I love it!

The Lands End are a good idea - I also like the two layer but they're so bulky the kids don't like to wear them. Maybe the LE ones aren't so bulky.

Great idea about gently used too - you can't even tell A's current coat is from last season but the sleeves are to short.

So ordered DD2 a Columbia off Amazon for $50, while it was $100 in stores. It is not bulky. Columbia runs small IMO.

We love Columbia. Their down jackets are warm, but not bulky.

                Children's coats

O has had several llbean coats and they have all worn well and lasted.

Two of them he wore for two years a lot and are still in such good shape we are passes them on to friends.

In our climate we only need the "outer" jacket but it feels much lighter than DD's LL Bean one so I do think the LE 3-in-1 version might be on the less-restrictive side as warm winter parkas go.
