Dyslexia ?

Do we have anyone with a dyslexic child? I've looked at online resources, lists for diagnosis, etc. A is constantly reversing letters and numbers. I don't feel like she has a lot of the "symptoms" but some are glaring to me. Like just now she picked up a clock and said it was 7:80 when it was 7:08, she constantly confuses a small b and d. Those are the two I can think of off of the top of my head that she does A LOT! Her reading has slowed considerably, she doesn't seem to know how or want to sound things out.

Her teachers have not mentioned it and now that we're on break for two weeks I hope to work with her on her reading and see what happens but I'm just curious if anyone has encountered this or what I should be looking for.

I don't, but b and d switches are pretty common at her age.

Do you see Adele in any of the symptoms? If you do, Cheri, I would suggest that you have her evaluated. If there is something going on, early intervention is important.

Reversals are really totally normal, and not at all the main problem with dyslexia. I've been researching this too, but more because DS at 8 has been back-sliding and not decoding or spelling as well as expected for his reading level...http://dyslexicadvantage.com/ is one resource, especially their videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/DyslexicAdvantage

At her age I think you can just support, and observe, and consider an Orton-Gillingham phonics program to break down the process of learning to read (All About Reading, Spalding, Writing Road to Reading, Barton, or Logic of English). If she's dyslexic it's essential and if she's not it can't hurt. And/or go for psychological testing. A full neuropsychological profile including the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children (or similar) will identify strengths and weaknesses, and as I understand it, dyslexia is diagnosed in the discrepancy between strengths and weaknesses.

I will say that all of our kiddos did those reversals at her age. Some of them still had "Uncle Backwards" visit in second grade (writing letters or numbers backwards). Everything resolved itself by mid second grade. But certainly get her evaluated if you have any concerns.
