After an entire summer of "we have moved here/here's all the paperwork/what do you need from me?", I was told he would be re-evaluated after the first 9 weeks. This was over a month ago, so I made peace with it and moved on.
Last Thursday was meet the teacher day, so we went, brought all his supplies, and oriented ourselves.
Friday? The staffing specialist called me to inform me we would be changing teachers and rooms. When asked why, I was told that the new teacher had more experience and the school was simply trying to even out the ratio of boys:girls in each class. A little puzzled, but okay, I roll with it.

Today, first day of school: DS comes home with paperwork for a committee meeting regarding whether or not he needs an IEP or 504. The meeting is in 2 weeks...

This school is known for being really on top of things and has all the awards and ribbons, but the change of teacher, paired with this sudden paperwork/meeting request (I talked to this woman Friday, by the way, and there was no mention whatsoever) makes me uneasy.

As far as DS is concerned, he continues to improve and has been a champ this summer at VPK.
I would estimate he's almost completely caught up on language. ☺️

Unfortunately, what you described is not unusual. Fight for the IEP, and as many services they will allow.

Testing for DS1

Here we are at the end of K. Re-evaluated the IEP, and we are saying twice exceptional: elevated markers for ASD (but no dx), and language. Receptive is on age level now, with expressive about 1 year behind. Cognitive and problem solving are average to above average, as is IQ. Social language and social skills, as well as reading comprehension are the main targets for the therapies he will continue to receive.

With the hard data, I am going to a Dev Ped (who, mind you, wouldn't see him even 2 years ago because he didn't qualify, and I'm still a little bitter about the whole damn thing), and an eval for Cog Beh therapy next week with a child psych that is well-recommended. I also called a local center that specializes in ABA therapy for social skills, to see if they could help.

I feel really good about the refined IEP, and the team of people involved.

I still am unsure if it's ASD (I mean, we've seen so many people...), but whatever the reasons, he is getting what he needs to be his best self. ❤

We are in the same spot. Just did a new 3y IEP for K1. Twice exceptional with a fruit salad dx for SPD. High risk for ASD, ADHD and dexlexia but nothing conclusive. Let me know if you want to talk.

FWIW, the ASD keeps popping up for us and every time we revisit it they say he's got some autistic features but not autistic. Just "atypical". A peculiar smart kid. High IQ. Quirky and socially immature.

He's come so far based on your advocating for him! I know it's still a challenge to get all these appointments and specialists lined up but his progress is awesome. You are an incredible advocate for him.

This is us -- although, the school counselor seems quite convinced. I gently reminded her that slightly elevated on one or two things does not a diagnosis make. 😇

School counselor is not qualified to dx. If you are worried, ask the developmental psychologist. We've had K1 seen by a psychologist, various pediatricians, various Occupational therapists. They all say no one ASD.

So, 4 out of 6 people in our end of the year IEP meeting have either retired, decided to stay at home, or left for a different job.

So... I am dealing with a new SLP, Staffing specialist, teacher, and ESE teacher. Not huge, but still slightly unsettling.
Fast forward: last year, DS urinated outside during PE (I think it was the first week of school?) and was reprimanded by the PE teacher. Principal called me, falling all over herself, apologizing and telling me she would handle it. Okay, whatever, my kid isn't traumatized or talking about it.
The PE teacher is now apparently being taken to court and investigated by the DOE (!!!) because she had disciplinary action taken against him and he was flagged by Legal Services. This poor man has to go to court and could get sanctions against his teaching license...

I am now the figurehead for some nasty vendetta or some such nonsense (even though I never asked for him to be disciplined, nor did I contact anyone). I am in the middle, getting to the bottom of all this. If this is all about him making my son apologize to a classroom of kids who may or may not have seen him urinate outside? Overkill. If there's more, the onus is on me to pull his personnel file for public records and then go talk to the principal. Either way, a lot of work and drama (for probably nothing). :/

It should be done next week, if I can get what I need and then set up a meeting.

That sounds like the principal is using the incident for her own agenda to me. Ugh, sorry you have to deal with it.
