Hmmm... I just spent four months in kindergarten in a "excellent" rated district. Kindergarten is the new First grade. I promise you most kindergartens (ESPECIALLY half day kindergartens) have all but cut out things like craft time, story time, cooperative learning, etcetera. IMHO, many kindergartens do not represent developmentally appropriate practice. By about November, kids see what is up and they start disliking school. It's "sit and stick, voices off, eyes on me". There is a WHOLE universe of discussion embedded in this, but in today's climate, if you even *think* your son may benefit from delaying kindergarten, you should probably do it. My theory is that kindergartners should finish the year LOVING school and feeling confident about belonging and being capable at school. I highly doubt most "great" school districts can truly offer this experience.
Also, in some wealthier districts, the overwhelming trend is to hold. Therefore, my August 20th daughter is sometimes 1.5 years younger than her peers. She's in 7th grade and it definitely has shown up.
Whatever you do, make the decision and don't look back. If you do send, do not be afraid to do a transitional year of a second kindergarten or pre-first grade (fill in your location's terminology).
Good luck!
