• Potty Training an Exceptional Child

Here we go again!

DS2 will be 4 in Sept., and we started underwear yesterday with a timer on my phone. Pull-ups just aren’t enough to light a fire under him.

He’s doing very well, with minimal pushback: something about the timer is novel (for now).
The underwear he picked out himself also seems to be helping.

I have the timer set for every 30 minutes, but I’m wondering if I should set it for every hour instead? This is a kid who doesn’t communicate well, and also doesn’t seem to mind being wet or soiled in a diaper or pull-up.
Should we wait and transition to 60 minutes after a week of 30 minutes?

I usually do 30 mins and push the fluids. I make the fluids special by adding a splash of juice to the water to make them drink a lot of it. Lots of reps and then taper off the juice water.

Fevers and potty training are the only guaranteed juice times at our house so they loooove it.

I do this too. Mine were really hard to train. K1 was actually the easiest because he was at a child development center where they would line up the boys and take them all at once at regular intervals. I don’t think it occurred to him to argue with me about it whereas K2 was just horrid. However, K1 still wets himself occasionally at 8.5yo. It happens when he becomes hyper-focused on something and just doesn’t seem to get the body signal that he’s wet. There have been times that he is actively wetting himself, I see it happening, and he denies feeling it at all.

Any interest in “sinking” fruit loops? Boy I nannied for loved to aim and sink the cereal in the toilet.

I would bet he truly doesn’t feel it. Interoception is really fascinating and so helpful to keep in mind for our kiddos.

This is a great little discussion. Kind of awkward the way they are standing but good information just the same!

Pollyanna. This is fascinating. I have asked his OT and pediatrician numerous times if this is related to SPD and they deny having ever seen this.

Crazy making right? I sent this to our oldest a while back because she is a late diagnosis and she was like, “wow, this explains so much”.

It's such an ambiguous dx. There was an ADHD conference here where one of the speakers caused a riot when he said SPD is a scam and doesn't exist. Well, my kid sees music and the sound of rushing water makes him feel like he's falling.

We have successfully day trained! Poop is still something we are “catching” (since he usually goes early in the morning, in his overnight pull up), but we have had a few successful ones.

It took about 3 weeks - 1 month of active work.
