  • Kate's best weekend ever

Started Friday night, when her cell phone broke. It was a piece of crap flip phone that used to be my cell before I got the iphone, and it was due for an upgrade. Mac took her in to get a new phone, and he let her get a really nice one, with a touch screen. Not an iphone, but pretty good. She was amazed at her good luck. We really appreciate the texting-- that's the only way to get her attention. We text her when it's time to eat, text her to see if she's getting a ride to soccer, everything. And she answers her texts... It's been a huge help this year. So she got a new phone.

Saturday Kate went to the mall with her friends while the rest of the fam did the sports stuff. While there, she tried on some cute dresses for the 8th grade formal and found one she liked- half off which made it under $30, which was her self-imposed budget. She texted me the picture of her in the dress, and I texted her to put it on hold and I'd buy it for her later. She was again, amazed.

Then she texted DH to ask if she could stay at the mall later with a different group of friends who were going later on in the day. DH said OK. she was amazed, again...

After the games were done, I went to the mall to meet her to buy the dress. It is cute, not too grown up, and not formal enough for prom. And cheap. So I bought it. She told me she looked like a "princess" in it.

Then I took her to Sephora (new in our mall) to look at the foundation makeup bc she doesn't like to wear anything on her face, but she is really self consious about her skin, which is typical teenage skin with some breakout action. She was in awe of me when I walked in to the store and 2 sales people came up to me right away. She said she was there with her friends for an hour and no one offered to help them! Haha... The privelege of having credit cards, I guess.

Anyway, I had the salesperson try out 2 different foundations for Kate- the mineral loose foundation powder stuff worked really well for her. And so I bought her a start up kit- with some concealer too. She was again, amazed.

She then went off to meet her 2nd group of friends. When she told them all her good fortune, they were also amazed. They thought Mac and I had been abducted and replaced with cool parents.

Anyway, that was her weekend. She spent about 10 hours at the mall... Sunday she did chores and homework all day, pretty much, but no complaining!

What a great story! You give me hope for this teen parenting thing. I'm so glad you had such a great weekend with her. Wonderful about the dress, too. It is so hard to find things that are appropriate for that age.

You got to hold onto these little victories and keep them in your pocket for silent mental review when the going gets tough. Congrats!

I want to be Kate. Pretty please. My weekend involved 12 hours in the car with three little kids, one actively puking into various plastic bags. Being a grown up is so not fun. Text that.

I'm glad she had such an awesome weekend. Bask in the cool parent glow for as long as you can.
