They have 10/month data plans. They are "add a phone" on the ATT family plan - so 10 a month for any phone (including that little Firefly). We pay the 10 for the add a phone - they signed on for the 10 a month for the data plans when they went up to iPhone. My phone is also only 10 for the add a phone but 30 for the data because I've got the newer phone and I gave my grandfathered in 10/month plan to my teen.

Wait--this was an option in the past? Are you sure? When DH got off his parents plan before "the Great AT&T Iphone Data Plan Screwover" they started saving $30/month because he got off (and then I started paying for the damn iphone that for some reason he gets and I don't)
No...I'm not bitter at all.

All I know is that without texting, two iphones, and one Samsung slider phone for Ryan, 700 shared minutes, we pay $130/ month. $60 per iphone and $10 for the Samsung with no data. Chad and I have the unlimited data and often go over 2GB. We stream a lot.
I am seriously considering an iphone for Ryan for Christmas, but I always thought iphones were $30 a month plus the data plan.

My son is just starting with debate club. You'd love it...being a lawyer and all. I had to hold myself back from telling him the six different attacks I could see for arguing a bill about retesting elderly drivers in their mock congress today. Much, much more fun than doing math homework. It isn't all bad. Don't fret.
Debaters are the best!

I looked into adding my mom to our ATT plan, we both have iPhones with the 30 data plans....they told me I could add my mom for 10- month plus data...and there are two data options now...a smaller one and a larger one...the larger one is 25$. I think the smaller one was 10 or 15$.
DH and I have iPhone4's with grandfathered unlimited $30 data plans. DD1's phone is $14.98/month for phone service and insurance, no data plan. We also have the $30 unlimited texting family plan and share 700 call minutes between the three of us. Our bill, subtracting the hospital discount, ends up being around $150/month (give or take) total.
Maggie got her phone when she was 11. My mom gave it to her and paid for it for a year. Then we took it onto our plan -- $10 for the line, $5 for 200 texts a month. She isn't allowed to answer her phone or text from her room. Ella will likely get one when she turns 11. We don't have a home phone so it's a necessity if we leave the girls home alone or with their brother.

I think 11-13 is about the right age depending on the kid. I know that the 13 year olds that had just gotten their first phone in middle school appreciated it LOTS more than my son when he got his. They'd been begging for years and years. My kids got theirs at 11 because I'm a paranoid mom and I need to know where they are and that I can reach them when I start to let them have some independence. See, it is all about me.
We are also about 130-140 a month for four iPhones with data and unlimited texting. I am a lucky snot because I had the original iPhone with the introductory 10/month unlimited data plan AND that got grandfathered in to transfer to any phone when they switched to this new variable rate. So....I can pay 10/month for a new phone. SInce I had transferred it to my DS when I bought a new one, he's got the sweet plan on his number. He upgraded via the grades deal and now has a 3G with unlimited data for 10/month. DH and I both pay the 30. DD has the cheapo data.

Damn. I am SO FREAKIN' JEALOUS. We pay the same amount for our plan that includes DH's iPhone w/ unlimited plan and my crappy little phone that doesn't even have a texting keyboard, plus 200 txts to share between us. (They wanted to charge me $20/month to get a phone with a texting keyboard, though IMSN has revealed to me that it was just one jerky store)
I get insanely jealous of DH's iPhone...I'm ashamed to say it causes quite a few spats.

We are like Heidi I think. We have 3 lines and the iPhones for dh and me have the 30 data plan which we will NEVER give up lol. We have a 30 unlimited txt plan for the family. Kates phone has an unlimited data plan for 15 a month. All in all, our bill is shocking but I love my iPhone. It's like high doped Internet vs dial up. So worth it.
