My sister gave me the talk and showed me what to do when I got my period. Mom was working three jobs to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.

I never got a "talk" because my mom just kept it as a running dialogue from the first time I asked about the difference between girls and boys, probably around 4 or 5. I got my period early and remember hating it but not because my mom didn't tell me what was up. I have 2 older sisters and there is a bit of an age gap between us so they helped "fill in the blanks" about the things I was too embarassed to ask my mom as I got older.

My mom is a retired nurse. We always had conversations about it. Always.

We've had running dialogues with the girls, typically instigated whenever they have specific questions. We started out very clinical -- technical even. Broke out the anatomy books, etc. With DS, he hasn't really asked much so we haven't discussed it in as much detail. He's just now approaching the age his sisters were at when they became more curious.

As a matter of fact, DS and I have had a couple conversations in the last month. One of which I'm pretty certain put his world on a new tilt when it was revealed that his sisters do not have penises.

I'm thinking I might get some of the old veterinary artificial insemination videos to use....

Cue cheesy elevator porn music. "bring the bitch in the room". " put the bitch on the table". I'll make sure to include the part about them "tying up" and being stuck together butt to butt for an hour or so.

And when my mom asked D (4) why he was playing with his penis he responded "because it gets bigger when I do."

            HAHAHA!
At least he's honest -- and I'm glad you put this in here, because I have heard from several moms of little boys that this does happen. I asked DH about it, and didn't seem to think that the penis does this at an early age. Fine, he can change the baby's diaper and find the morning wood that people keep telling me about.

When I asked DS why he always had his hand down his pants, his response was that his penis was stuck to his leg. He then asked what I do when it happens to me.

Yeah, we had an earth changing convo that morning.

Oh yes, even babies get erections. DH sees it all the time in his peds uro practice. He says moms will come in all the time mortified because their little boys are getting erections, and he reassures them that it's totally normal.

We had to have the 'get your hand out of your pants' discussion repeatedly and my husband said, "if you had one, you'd understand." We talk about it a lot because he knows that he's adopted and that it was a Russian lady named Larissa who gave birth to him. (we call her by her name because I don't want her to be a fantasty, nor do I want her referred to as 'birth mother' because I think it confuses the issue.)

It always comes up at Christmas- for obvious reasons!
